Birdseye, no Birdseye?

alrighty, i used to have a stingray from 2004 and i got a sterling from 1997.

and my sterling has that nice birdseye-neck on it, but my Stingray didn't have that.

so my question is, why does the sterling have it and my stingray not? is it like a random thing that some necks have it, or is it something available for extra charge?

i bet there is a big conspiracy theory behind it!

EBMM stopped using birdseye necks due to supply/demand driving their supplier's prices up to the point where it became unreasonable.

Actually we didnt stop using it ....it stopped using us.

Boy the good old days where we could buy birdseye and not charge a premium and make all of these standard guitars with it....It is so hard to find and so expensive the stuff we do get gets used on sig and BFR models....The way things are going we probably wont see any in the not too distant future.

BP, I bought it on eBay a couple of years ago from a seller who Wonderdog should probably hunt down and kill for trademark infringement. But for $10 bucks I wasn't going to make a big deal of it

Birdseye is beautiful and I love my basses that have it, but it is not as stable of a wood due to the very thing that makes it so beautiful. The highly figured necks have to be adjusted more often than the non birdseye necks. That is of course unless you finish the neck and then it is a moot point. I would still go with a birdseye neck if given the option though!

What Kirby explains is exactly what kept me away from birdseye. And anyway, even cosmetically speaking, I prefer the look of immaculate maple.
