As someone who plays a lot of classic rock, the Big Al was a great choice for me. The passive/active option made it. And I know the Bongo guys will tell you how massive the B string is, but I can tell you from experience, so is the Big Al B string.

Big Al would be nice as a 5 string. If the price on Amazon gets any lower I'll grab it, review em out & keep the winner

$1250 BTW on Amazon Big Al SSS 5 Rosewood\3 Tone sunburst

You can get more dif. sounds out of a Big Al, but I do not need so many different sounds. I'm glad that my Bongo HH sounds great when I have the potis in the neutral positions, with flatwounds on it the Bongo sounds amazing.. the first bass I can play with flatwounds even with "very noisy" bands, not one thought to switch to roundwounds for a better cut through the bandsound.. yes the Bongo is for me the best sounding and lightweight bass I ever had in my hands.. it's pure fun to play one and as the other EB instruments the Bongo is a loyal and faithful partner for a lifetime.

I've had enough of not owning a Bongo so Im getting one. This will be the last purchase for me for quite some time as Im moving house, changing jobs, and hopefully going on holiday or getting a car. Such is life! But I consider myself to already be very lucky with what I have...and I literally will have a huge collection, (not as many as some!).

Sticking with the Bongo 5 HHp vs the Big Al SSS 5. The Bongo is just too awesome.

I own both of those basses and if I had to choose just one...

Bongo.

The Big Al is super-versatile. You want P bass? Done. You want Musicman DNA? Yep. You want active? Sure. You want passive? Absolutely.

The one thing the Big Al will not do is sound like a Bongo.
