So last night, at the clinic featuring Sterling, Cliff Hugo, Dave Marotta, Tony Levin and Dave LaRue, the topic of the mix came up. Dudley, standing off the stage, wrote this note and handed it to Dave Marotta:

Can't say it any better than that.....

Shot, schmot. I got the card itself. It's a definite keeper.

Yes it was very cool that everyone on the stage was playing a Bongo. And not because Sterling just handed them out....all of them actually do play Bongos. Cliff's Stealth is worn shiny in spots. Of the four, only TL does not have it as a main bass. But then he's got that incredible blackburst BFR SR5....

I learned some really useful things from that clinic. Especially when Dave Marotta played a sparse funk line over a drum beat (what a drummer!), then Dave LaRue played a much busier line over the same beat to show the contrast. Lately I've been thinking a lot about that very topic (presentation, dynamics, listening to the spaces instead of the notes) but I'd never thought of the contrast in styles and how much of a difference it makes. It was a real epiphany.

Wait a minute...I'm hijacking my own thread here.... :D

EDIT: Oops, don't wanna hijack, I'll save it for the eventual thread about the bass clinic.

That card really is cool, lucky you that you thought to grab it.
