Since we were not responsible for the conceptual sketches, we can only speculate on the exact inflluences that Designworks used. Here is another possibility...

And although similar adouglas' previous idea, but I think this really comes closer to hitting the MM line of colors:

Windshield wiper?

People have the STRANGEST ideas sometimes....

Reminds me of the lever on the side of a Barcalounger.

I love the Spalt designs. You can't accuse them of making a Jazz copy. :D

I believe Dude has played that Viper with the windshield wiper pickup. In fact, I think they even call it the windshield wiper pickup....

I love the idea of the Bongo starting with the MF from Star Wars...

I think the sweep angles make sense. When it's near the bridge, and everything is brightened up there, the high strings are a bit further out from the bridge so they don't get too hot and zingy. And vice versa at the neck. And since the pivot point is so far out to the edge, the inbetween zone approximates a staight line motion for various shifts in the middle zone, and in the middle I fully agree with you about the striaght line thing. Plus it probably is wired thru the pivot end, so less stress and motion for the wire than the Gibson Grabber thing.

I wonder if there's piezos in the bridge? Doubt it, not many knobs, but there *should be* piezos in the bridge dammit. I mean if you're gonna get so swept away [< note dumbpun] about pickups, why stop short ? Also, it has too many frets. Just one, right up at the nut, would be enough. Says "Prototype". They'll get it right before they're done, I'm sure.
