But I seem to have put them on the wrong one (the SEQs Bongo). I think I'll keep SEQs wearing Slinkys while the Dargie sports EB flats. I like the the fretless voice of the rounds better.

The rounds tend to be a little rougher on the neck of a fretless. I had them on mine for a bit and liked the sound but didn't like what it was doing to the neck, so back to flats. Not sure why I sacrificed sound for looks, now that I think about it.

You ever tried groundwound / halfwound strings? There are more middle ground alternatives if you want flat feel and roundwound sound.

nik - your avatar is just - umm - it's just - umm...........

I just put D'A half rounds on my Bongo HS - seems they are a bit stiffer than Slinkies - had to straighten the neck a bit. Sound good though.

I've always wondered if half-rounds really sound any different than flats - don't they both have flat outsides?

Oh yes. I've got the EB flats on my Dargie SR4 again. I gave them a cleaning with the String Cleaner Wonder Wipes and that friction I complained about in my last thread is gone! Feels so smoooooooose. After playing more, their tone seems to have more bassy frequencies than anything else. I looking forward to how their tone changes as they age. Like the Dargie, these strings ain't going nowhere else. :D

half-wounds can either be roundwounds that are "ground down" to feel flatter, or flatwounds made in some unconventional manner. It really, really differs from brand to brand. I've tried dozens.

Yup that's it. The flats made the SEQs warmer and fuller. I prefer a bright and clear sound for fretless so the two Bongos are going to swap strings tomorrow.

Swap done. And Wow! DD Bongo + EB flats pushes the SVT real nice with no gain pedals.

A single H Bongo with flats makes such a great noise.

(I think the green finish really firms up the deal.)

I just put some flats on my DD Bongo tonight. They were Pyramids, not EB, but they sound great nonetheless. I couldn't be more pleased.

I wanted to try Flats on my Bongo. I had a set that I broke and G string on about a year ago and just put the top 3 strings on. What a great tone they give the Bongo. I am going to go out a get a set of the EB's as soon as possible. They not only sound great but feel great too.......

I am about to go put the EB flats back on the DD Bongo HS. The half-rounds really didn't do it for me afterall.

Oh yeah I found a clean but menacing distorted tone now!

Bongo+EB flats (P/Mag blend @ 10:00, mid shift @ 2:00, mid boost @ 3:00, bass @ 2:00, treb @ 11:00) into my SVT. The high mids plus the significant mids boost gets me a nasal and snarly tone that stays coherent even as I turn it up. The lines during the verses are mostly hammered on. Gotta love the Bongo's transient response.

Bonus: Check out how I used a delay too :p Decent clip if I didn't start wanking horribly during the chorus.
