First thing is, the case is battleship grey, which is definitely different. Nice G&G case, though, with Bongo shaped insert so it does actually fit. Hmmm. Non-locking case? No keyhole, no keys - that's odd.
The finish is charcoal and has a slight sparkle thing going, or maybe I'm just going blind now. Too much sparkle? Nah. The pickguard looks great; I think it's the python design. The finish on the neck isn't an issue once you start playing it - can't tell the difference, can't really tell that it's there and it isn't sticky like poly can be. It's more like a satin finish, like late 80s-early 90s Strats had (maybe they still do).
It balances nicely on a strap, even a cheap skinny strap. I have to get some straploks on there so I can use my regular straps.
Slinkys came installed and even though the action seems a little low right out of the box, got a little fret rattle unplugged, it SMOKES plugged in. I'm going to leave the setup as it is and see if it continues to work for me. Might have to tweak it a bit.
Shockingly, the Slinkys sound good to me. I'm going to leave them on a while to see if I can continue to deal with them. I usually string everything with TI Flats....we'll see.
The pole alignment is not perfect, but it's close - only the G string is off a bit on the neck pickup and not by much. With these pickups, it doesn't make much difference at all from everything I've read. I tried to hear a fall-off in volume or something - nah. It's good.
Sound - whoa. Now THIS is what we've been waiting for, MM fans. The humbuckers sound very different from each other, and the blend knob can really kick it in the ass. I like the stacked tone knobs - big sweep of tonal change in those mofos. I don't know how this is going to affect my relationship with Stingrays. This is very, very big sound - in a word, powerful. Say what you like about the design, you won't hear one of these through a decent amp and walk away unimpressed.
I've heard some minor complaints about the neck flattening out near the body. I think it does do that, but again, after playing it for a minute or two, it doesn't feel unusual at all. It's very comfortable and the neck reminds me a lot of a Stingray Five neck - relatively tight spacing and not wide like an RB5 or J5.
