Messin around with my new-to-me bongo. Have any of you noticed the SC pickup being noisy? When I pan to the neck pickup I get alot of hum/buzz going on, especially around computer monitors? Is this a real single coil that will always buzz, even when the bass is panned to the center?

It's a single coil pickup---they hum. That's just what they do. And that's why they invented humbuckers.

That being said, the neck pup on my Bongo HS is fairly quiet as single coils go.

Mine makes this noise: " ."

Mighty quiet single coil. I wouldn't bet on it around fluorescent lighting, iffy power or dimmer switches, but even humbuckers will make noise around those.

Mine makes none... Very quiet...

Only time I get a hum is when I get *very* close to my computer monitor.

I don't think my Stealth H/Sc made any unwanted noise; damn-quiet, that beast was!

Thats probably it, I was playing in front of my big ol' CRT monitor. While I live in a newish house, I won't count out dirty power from this outlet. I'll take the rig/bongo to another part of the house and maybe my gig tonight to see whats up.

Depending upon the bar (lights, TVs, etc.) all 3 of mine make noise at times.....and at times they are quiet.

Pretty much my experience, too. My HH4 has never uttered a peep anywhere. At my home they're all dead quiet, though.

further experiements show that the SC is definitely humming. It gets louder themore you pan toward the neck. Panned to the bridge, the bass is quiet. I also get lots of noise when I stand close to my amp. Face the bass toward my amp and it gets pretty loud, like louder than notes I am playing. Hrmms...

My HS does the same thing, around flouros and monitors, but it never happens in the studio. Its a single coil and it is going to give you some hum. I discovered a trim pot under the electronics cover on mine, and you can dial out some of the hum. hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check it out. I guess I am used to at least being able to pan in the middle to get rid of hum, but since there isn only one SC, I guess if you want hum free you have to pan 100% bridge?

This may be useless information, but I've found that my amplification can affect any hums/buzzes etc. I assure you all the amps I've played on are pretty much brand new, so I doubt it's a matter of them being old, but on occasion there is an evident buzz when I'm playing through my 2x10, though as soon as I start playing it's gone, and even before that it can only be heard with an attentive ear.

Maybe it's just me that this happens to, but I figured it was worth a mention. It may be worth a shot to screw around with the configs on both the bass and the amp/head.

In either case, good luck!

Is the SC supposed to be hum cancelling? I am getting conflicting information here... Inquiring minds what to know.

EDIT: The bass player review says that it is supposed to be silent... hrmm....

The Humbucker pickup is "hum" canceling, a single coil is always going to give you some noise. the EBMM single coils are less noisy than some F*****S I've heard.

Again, I'm getting two answers. Which one is right?

1.) The SC is a real SC and has no hum cancelling, hence I will get hum whever the SC is in the mix.

2.) The SC is hum cancelling and should not hum.
