A friend's band was doing an corporate afternoon party (300+) and the bass player was out of town- not normally my thing, but I agreed to sit in. I show up, unloaded and set my rig up. Nothing but compliments from the guys (who love GK stuff). Take out my bass and you would have thought I was a mass murderer. "Is that the only bass you brought?" "I don't think that is going to 'fit' what we're doing" and so on. Sound check - jaws hit the floor. I had Kermit sooooooooo dialed in it was scary. I'm not sure what it is but Kermit is very different sounding from the Dargie (in a good way) and it was happening. Gig went very well. Appologies from everyone (and I think I talked the guitarist into trying a Luke)... and more have seen the Bongo light.

I love that.

Other than my hot-rodded p-bass (my first bass ever - but it is in bad shape) an Ashbory and my daughter's Daisy Rock, Bongos are all I have... should have brought the Ashbory and the Daisy Rock with me - would have loved to see their faces then.

I'd guess it had more to do with the bass being lime green than the Bongo shape, no? Ha, perhaps a combination of the two.

Actually it wasn't the color (the guitarist had a loud purple Strat in his stable) - it was all about the shape (and yes, the toilet seat comment was made too) - just closed-mindedness until they heard it (and that was enough to stop any bad comments)

Before hearing Bongo: "What the hell is THAT?"

After hearing Bongo: "What the hell IS that?"
:D
I've been showing some friends the bongo i'm after, and it's like marmite, some of them either really liked it and the rest really didn't like it... for those that didn't, well, wait until they hear it ;)

It's stories like that that make me want a Bongo... more so the narrow minded "What is that? Its ugly" part... but also to show people that when it comes to instruments Sound is ALWAYS better then looks (Even if I love the look of the Bongo now:D)

I had a similar experience this weekend...we were playing out and there was a guy from a local R&B band in the audience, when we took our break, he walked up to me and said "what IS that thing?" and I proceeded to show it to him. He was just so blown away by the sound of it.

And he was amazed that I was using a pick. Oh well....old habits die hard.
