When I was a teenager, I was a fanatic. Home from school, I hop over the back fence into the field and hit 200 balls before dinner. Back then graphite shafts were fancy-shmancy. My driver was made of persimmon. Last year I played a few rounds with my brother, which were my first rounds in nearly 15 years. I miss it. I grew up in Portmarnock, one of Ireland's great classic links courses. Man, a summer morning on that front nine, you can hear the waves on the beach just over the sand dunes, gorse bushes smell like coconut, sky larks singing, it was about as close to heaven as you could get.
Can you imagine if the golf industry went the same way as the guitar industry? We'd still be hacking our way around using hickory-shafted mashie-niblicks ('cause it was good enough for Bobby Jones).
Mind you, there was a beautiful sound to hitting one 'out of the screws' off a persimmon head with a steel shaft.
Just started lessons myself. Haven't been on the course yet, just range and putting green.
In the small world dept, my instructor is a former lpga player who is married to one of the guys (pat hicks) who started GIT back in the day which i attended one summer ('82) and really enjoyed.
I went for the max fli "junior" set. For obvious reasons
I'm pretty much a novice at golf as well. Never thought I'd like it till one of my sons was taking lessons at 1st Tee and I went hitting some balls on the far end of the range with my older son (who also takes lessons on different days). I fell in love and it was terrific bonding time.
I got some cheap china clubs and already snapped a couple shafts (driver and wood) so I'm looking to make a step up in quality. I'm checking out Golfsmith today, as a friend gave me some coupon cash cards, but will try the Palms if they are open to the public.
By the way, a friend who has golfed many years is giving me instruction every time we go out and it has helped immensely.
