When I need string mutes the side of my right palm works wonders.

Or a piece of soft sponge.
I love the Jamerson sound so my SR4 has flats and the sponge mute.

But I agree the SR with the pop up mutes has that cool vintage look.

I believe I remember someone mentioning that the edges were very sharp

They were really sharp on the springy thing that the foam was stuck to - I took it off of mine and it's around here somewhere, and never had any plans on using a mute anyway.

There WAS a company making a handy looking contraption that had the same concept, but with the muting from the side, rather than underneath.
This was an easily switchable unit, from memory, that was able to be installed with just double sided tape.
I seem to recall that there was a minimum string height that it would install into, but that was the only hitch, really.
I used to have a couple of Foderas a few years ago, and Fodera were actually selling this accessory from their site for a while, but not any more, it seems.
I think they're still around..... made in Italy, or somewhere.
