I bought a new Sabre a few weeks ago and I'm having a problem with breaking G strings. I've broken 4 so far, all while tuning up. As you can hopefully see by the picture, as I'm tuning up, the wrap starts getting stripped, exposing bare wire. This particular string I managed to get up to tune, but I know if for some reason I have to take off the string, when I tune up again, it's going to lose more wrap and the string will get weaker and snap.

I've filed around the hole and down in the hole in case there are any burrs causing problems, but it's not fixing the issue.

I've called customer service as well to see if it just might be a faulty tuner but I wanted to get other opinions as well.

This is verry strange. The stripping of the outer string wire seems to occur near the edge of the tuner. But you have propably allready checked the tuner for anny sharp edges....? I can not think of anny other reason this could happen.

Btw, is that a full rosewood neck sabre? More pictures please! :)

It allso shouldnt break because the outer wire is stripped. The inner wire should be able to take the tension.

Yeah I filed a bit the best I could and it didn't seem to help.

Yes it is :)

Well, I assume the wrap is getting frayed somehow, and eventually as I'm tensioning, it pulls out of the wrap that it is still stuck in the hole. But that little piece that's left has wire in it, so I don't know. All I know this is has happened with 5 strings so far and I'm getting frustrated.

Did you cut the string to length? If so, first make a 90 degree angle in the string, then cut off the surplus.

Yup, I did that. I actually just heard back from service. They're going to send me a new tuner just in case there is an issue with the one I have.

Someone on another forum suggested that perhaps I didn't have enough wraps. I usually get 2.5-3 and that has always been more than enough, but they think that especially with D'addario Chromes that it might not be enough and the string is getting frayed and unraveling. But still I think something is up if it's happened on 5 strings so far. So hopefully a new tuner fixes it.

+1 for this..

you can also try this:

measure string about 1/2" longer than you usually do, bend it using a flat nose plier, cut excess string off.

on the first turn you make half a turn around the post, then let the string run across the slot on top of the post.
after that you wind it like usual.

i sometimes use this to keep flatwounds from slipping

hth!

I don't like the way the junction of the leader and
the main wrap is happening right at the peg. You
might need a spacer on the string to pull it back.
Could be just an unfortunate coincidence as there
are no industry standards for the tailpiece-to-peg
distance nor for the length of the main windings.

I ended up replacing the tuners with Hipshot. I got a replacement tuner from MM (thanks for the quick service btw) but it didn't help and I did have to do the overlap wrap described by MrMusashi. But the idea of having to do that just due to the tuners causing me problems bothered me, so I felt it was best to just replace them.
