...hi groovier....serial, IMO...late 1998 to early 1999.

(how'd I go Brian?).

Re string Vol....try this....

While depressing the B string at the last fret, measure the distance from the bottom of that string to the top of the pickup magnet for that string. Adjust for a distance of 4/32 inches. Do the same with the G string but, this time, aim for a distance of 3/32 inches. Final adjustment may have to be made to the G side by ear, so that the volume is even across all strings.

Rod is right, make sure that the pickup height is correctly adjusted. If the problem persists, try changing B string gauge. I use 40, 60, 80, 100, 125 Status Hotwires, stainless steel round cores and get terrific balance. 130 would probably be right if you use 45-105 or 45-100 for the other strings.

Another thing to consider is through what you are listening. Many cabs have quite weak performance characteristecs below 40Hz (open E) and thus the volume of the B string below E will be perceived to be lower. Recording the bass flat and listening to the results through a set of good speaker and a good pare of cans might lead you to other conclusions of your B string volume that by just listening to the bass through your rig. The fundamental notes below E require a certain size room to develop so when listening to your rig or to recorded material through speakers of any kind, make sure that you don't stand (or sit) too close to the speakers and that the room you're in is quite big.

I hope some of this makes sense and, ideally, that it helps ;)

basscat has raised a point I overlooked!

After doing the initial setup of the pickup, as I've described above, plug a set of headphones into the Bass's lead socket and carry out the final ballancing using them....not many people realise you can listen to your Bass via phones. Keep tone controls flat and keep the vol down. It's not going to sound fantastic but you will be able to make the final adjustment with ease and not be influenced by other factors. :D
