I was wondering what would be the consequences if the preamp would ever cause issues in an Axis Super Sport? Can the the mag pickups operate independently of the piezo or is everything routed through the preamp?

IIRC the pickups do not directly go through the preamp. This could be confirmed with somebody with a far better knowledge of guitar electrics than myself. however, having worked on a JP6 restoration and "been up close and intimate" to my albert Lee set up ...... and by the fact that the mags will still work even with no battery in the guitar, I think that the eventuality you envisage, will not materialise.

This sounds good to me. I appreciate technology but in some ways, I'm old school and traditional.

There are two independent outputs: One is mag only, the other has everything routed through the preamp (so the mags + piezo can be blended).

beej, that makes a lot of sense. I should have thought that through logically. So even if the electronics break, the guitar is not broken. One reason my confidence was shaken a bit was because one of my piezo saddles went bad a couple of weeks after buying the guitar.
