I have decided to sell my non-MM seven string because the neck shape gives me wrist pains, and because I love my JP6 SO MUCH...I've decided to buy some form of a JP7 once it's sold. I'll be able to go play a couple once I'm ready to buy, but I've got a few questions first regarding the neck shapes. I understand the various wood/material/construction differences between models, but I'd like to hear some input from people who have owned them for a while.

A) If I were to go down the original/BFR/JPX route, since they all have the original neck profile, how does the 7 compare to the 6 neck that I'm used to? I understand it has to be a bit wider, but how is it as far as feel/girth?

B) (This one can apply to 6 strings and/or 7 strings) Anyone here have a JPXI/JP12 AS WELL AS one of the other models? My question for you guys would be...how is the transition between the older neck shape vs the newer one?

Once again...I WILL go try them out first! But I just want to hear what you guys have to say. Besides, the JP13 might be out by the time I'm ready to buy haha.

Thanks guys. You rock!

as you already have a 7 string, you know who much wider those 7-necks are.
there is a difference between the JP6 and JP7, depending on the style you hold the necks in your hand, you will have a different angel of your left hand due to the neck size.

i´ve had a JP7 and now own a JPX7, they are great, they sound great and the play very nice, but overall i prefer the 6 string necks, it´s just more comfortable to play.
but still those guitars are EBMM Petrucci signatures, so they are very nice to play, just a bit different.

can´t tell you anything about the XI/12 necks.

JPXII is my first seven string and I can only say that it was easy to get used to but hand fatigue is greater than that of my six string JPXI. I don't know if there's any getting around that. I think my JP6 neck is a little more comfortable than my JPXI neck (17" radius vs 20") since it seems a little more narrow across. Perhaps the same may be true for the JP7/JPX7/JPXIII7 vs. JPXI7/JPXII7. Impossible to make a bad choice though, I think.

The Jp6 Neck is a 15" radius. I like the jp6 neck the most.... well and the JPX as it's the same radius. As for the seven string, it's one of the thinnest I've tried. I agree with Ben though, fatigue is still a problem for me, no getting around it

I've played all but the 13 and for some reason the JP7 is just the best for me. I have a couple other JP6s including a Dargie II and like I said the JP7 is just butter. I love the maple neck and the shape just fits me. I'm 6'5" but my hands are on the small side.

My new CD is all JP7 except one tune is Dargie. Coming soon.

Interesting. Learn something new all the time. So the 13 then is the only JP with a 17" radius? I honestly like both profiles of my jps but think this 15" feels more well rounded. Very happy to own both though!

Yeah, it's almost like he wanted to split the difference between the 15" and 20". I'm very interested in trying one...

Thanks for the replies you all. I have no doubt that I'll make a good choice, and I'll be sure to play what I can and decide which model I like the most.

I did think of another question though.

Another reason I want another seven string is because the low B on it sounds very muddy. Is that due to the pickups in it (it's a stock Ibanez RGD 2127z Prestige) or due to the basswood body? I'd assume it's due to the pickups because JP himself has always had a fairly tight seven string tone with his basswood JPs and the alder BFRs, but can any of you guys provide some input on this?

Thanks again guys, sorry for having so many questions.

I've played a noticed a lot of seven strings do have that muddy quality. Most likely be cause of the pickups as the I played a JP7 extensively in the store and the sound was tight and not at all muddy. The JP7 has a basswood body.
