Can you recall from your very early days as kids Charlie Delisio / Dale.
He was taught music by your neighbour Jack Marshall. He is currently living in Australia.

here is the story....
In sept of 1967 my dad decided that he had enough of retail, and wanted to move out of the San Fernando Valley and semi retire on this little side business selling slinky's and picks and belden cables. He was 37 and wanted to surf and learn to fly.

The three Ball brothers were devastated....they are making us move to NEWPORT BEACH! We love the Valley........

The first night we were camping in the living room of our new house and we heard a party across the street. HMMM maybe Newport is ok. Pretty soon we started hearing some serious major league jazz goin on. My Dad said "that sure sounds like Howard Roberts" Wowo who is that Trumpeter? (Jack Sheldon) Wow that bassist sounds just like either Check Berghoffer or Ray Brown. What the heck is goin on that has to be Shelly Manne on the drums" It was all of the above. Our new neighbor was the one and only Jack Marshall.

Ok so here is who Jack Marshall was....He was the first seeeion cat in LA in the fifties. He was an unbelievable producer. Among his production highlights was Peggy Lee's Fever and all of Howard Roberts fabulous jazz guitar albums. This is just scratching the surface on the production side. He started his cousin Chrispoher Parkening on guitar, and later hooked Chris up with Segovia. He did all of the transcriptions of Christopher
first two albums. He scored movies and tv shows, the most famous was the Munsters
He was a painter, and novelist. Do you get that he was an amazing man!

He had 4 kids. The most famous was his son Frank Marshall who produced the Star Trek raiders of the lost ark et and every thing under the sun. His son Phil is a gifted composer.

I learned so much from Jack. He was one of the deepest guy Ive ever known. To this day I tell my pals who play guitar a story that Jack told me. He was holding court with me (I was 13) he was holding his trusty Martin gut string and pointed to the fret board and said " This is the never ending challenge, no one will ever master it, it is the deepest piece of wood on the earth" I said what about Segovia, Joe Pass, Eric Clapton? He said that they were great but the beauty of the guitar is as brilliant as each example I gave him he said "name one who can play it all" I will never forget that and if you ever wonder why we are so enamored with the guitar this is the reason. It is capable of so much and will never be solved.

Long post but thanks for bringing the late great Jack Marshall up.

Im sorry but I dont remember your friend, but it could be because I wsas focused on Jack's daughter Sally...just kidding....ok maybe not

You have some great stories, boss - you really do.

And this:

he had enough of retail, and wanted to move out of the San Fernando Valley and semi retire on this little side business selling slinky's and picks and belden cables. He was 37 and wanted to surf and learn to fly.

Jack Marshall sounds like he was something else - I have the Munsters theme right here (learning it for the band) and as if that weren't enough, Peggy Lee and Howard Roberts?

But it's also is amazingly clear, as if no one else knows it but me, that Ernie was a story unto himself.

I don't know about the rest of the guys, although I suspect they feel the same way, but I absolutely love the stories.

Keep 'em coming, boss, if you can and if you have time. I thank you for all of it.

Jack

The Internet has brought so many coincidents together for me. If you didn't get my message from a post I put on the Bass Forum I'll gladly rewrite it.

Charlie went to school with a girl named Nova, is she your sister? Charlie’s family owned the "Villa Nova" restaurant in Newport Beach. His father was in the Movie Business prior to starting his Restaurant. He had on occasions had dinner with the Marshall's at there home.

Another post I put on was for anyone who remembered the band Rufus that he played in. I am grateful to be taught by a talented musician for the enjoyment of music that had been passed on by Jack Marshall.

It was a chance meeting with Butch Patrick AKA "Eddie Munster" in Brisbane Australia that Charlie Started to write the score for the “Munsters” for me to learn. I'll have to get a copy of the original music as I contacted Universal Pictures without any luck. Copyright Infringement?

Another chance meeting was on Saturday Night I meet Gavin [Rod Brokentruss] your Australian Mediator. Our son's play in the same football team. He was keen to teach me the Bass and when I mentioned Charlie played Bass he was keen to get together.
Gavin will be at your Open Day in September.

Here’s a small story. His wifes family are very good friend of Angus Young from AC/DC. I noticed they are one of your sponsored bands.
I’ll find some more Stories about Charlie as he has a few good one’s hidden away.

Cheer’s from Downunder.
Butch Patrick was just in Brisbane not that long ago I remember dropping some jingles off at a radio station when he was there. I didn't know who he was at first but one of the Breakfast announcers told me who he was. He mentioned Jack Marshall in the interview.

If it was 4KQ I organised the interview. Was he wearing a Football Jersey? If so it was the Rochedale Tigers. The team I mentioned in the last post.

Jogging your memory here. Charlie was closer to Matt and Phil. He was in grade school with them, He tells me Sally was a hot number in her day.

Found the current owner of a mid 70's prototype stingray. Have asked him to send photos. He won't part with it for anything.

Good catch Greg. I can host the pics when they arrive :)

By the way, Thursday was a good night. You and Charlie are top guys.
Chatting about all things Music Man over a few dozen beers goes down well ;)

P.S. Thanks for the contact Colin.

Great story.

Please tell me that a Big Poppa/Jack Williams book is in the works.

You could do it like Plato's Dialogues. :D
