Can 8.5 lb Ash/Rose StingRays be ordered from the factory?

I have been looking for 2 years for a sub 9lb StingRay with a 2 band and have had zero success. I even had 2 basses custom made with MM pu's in it but it isnt the same thing.

Thanks

Any particular reason on the weight?

I doubt, if custom orders were available to the 'public' that you'd be able to specify weight.

I think that's a long way of saying 'no'.

The answer I've heard most often is 'nope'.

You CAN call a dealer and - if he's a good one - ask him to weigh basses for you. I've seen it done. (Think Gard at BC.) And I know we have a most excellent dealer right here on the forum (Doug aka bassplyr).

Good luck, Ravioli!

Hi Jack

I like lighter basses ie Turner , Hofner and a 10+lb monster tends to sag my shoulder. I was at the chiropractor a while back and he asked me if I was in an accident , I said no , he showed me that one shoulder was longer than the other.
It's probably from carrying bass hardcases but....
But my back tends to act up after a while , but these new neoprene straps help out alot.

Most dealers tend to look at you funny if you ask if they can weigh a bass.

Thanks

PS Jack I like your Avatar , but could you please remove that guy that keeps popping up. Your wife is much easier on these old eyes.

Haha! Burned! :p

Rvl, I think it's really the luck of the draw? Being a five banger, it'll be even harder to find a 8.5lb one out there. In any case, welcome to the forums and good luck in your search! :)

I've never seen this addressed here, but are Sterlings lighter than Stingrays? They look smaller therefore I would think they would be lighter.

Sterlings are 9lbs average compared to 9lbs 5oz for stingrays, according to EB specs.

We lump around 50lb or 100lb cabinets, so why quibble about a 1 or 2lb difference in weight from bass to bass? We're bass players, for chrissakes :p

Seriously, after loading the van at home before the gig, then unloading the van at the venue, lugging the PA and setting it up, a 11 or 12lb load on my back for 45 minutes to an hour at a time is nothing. Civilian life has made you soft, Jack :D

I am with Jack on that one. Hang on Mark you will get older one day and yeah the gig was fun, but now how bout moving my body again will come up.

BTW, my SR5 is about the same wieght as my Jazz. It feels lighter at the end of the night for some reason. I don't really care why, but am glad it feels that way.

Shouldn't there be house cabs to play everywhere a band goes?

I'm with you Robert. Don't give up the search - it's worth the reward when you find your dream bass. My 3 band is 8.6 lbs, my 2 band is 7.9 lbs and both are ash/rosewood. It took me searching for several years to find them. I looked for a light Sterling for quite awhile and never found one under 9 lbs, finally just gave up!

Agreed! My 4x10 weighs in at a healthy 103lb, so if my bass is 9lb or 8.5lb isn't going to make unloading / loading any easier.

is a bongo lighter? they look like they would be ...

ive personally never cared about weight before but after 3 hours of playing i cant deny that i can feel it in my back ... ive always chalked it up as a fact of life: hang chunk of wood from neck = back will hurt
