Hello all,

Recently I became a huge fan of the Billy Gibbons signature strings, which have a .007 for the high E. I'm afraid, however, of using such a light string on a JP6 because of the locking tuner, which holds the string by friction, applying pressure on the string over a irregular surface, I suppose.

So I'm wondering: would it be too dangerous to use a .007 on the locking tuner, because it would break the string with a minor pressure?

It should be fine but I get where you are coming from, just tighten it normally and don't really tighten-tighten it. I have cut through a 9 once on my Beck Strat because I tightened it like a mad man lol.

You could wind it around the post a few times and then you wouldn't have to tighten it too much.
Never knew there were .07's?

Should be just fine, like Straycat said, just don't crank down on the lock nut any harder than you have to. If you find that can't make it work, pull the string straight through, do one half turn of the string around the post and back through the front hole again, then lock. That gives you twice as much string inside the hole to lock onto.

This is the solution I adopted. I simply wrapped the string as I would in a regular (non-locking) tuner, with the locker barely tightened. I also did this on my PRS, which also has locking tuners. I prefer to stay on the safe side.

Just for the record: the .007 worked just like any other string on a Floyd Rose system. No problems at all. With the locking tuners, however, I happened to break one string at the locking tuner.

And yes, the .007 is the lightest gauge available, and I'm finding it a lot of fun!! :D

Thanks everyone for the input.

i have tried all string sizes.. but never 7s. do they stay in tune ok and work ok on a floyd,,

Yep, just like any other gauge. If you're coming from heavier strings, however, the springs may need some time to adapt to the sudden loss of tension. The 7s are really light.
