With me I have to know the guitar part "inside out" before I can concentrate on the singing.
Just practice by yourself, tedious I know! - I don't find it easy.:(

guys like hetfield, gilmour, mustaine, etc. kill me with the fact that they can nail some pretty tough rythems and do vocals without a hickup (and gilmour solos and sings :p )

When I sing I sound like a cat in a blender :D

Therefore I don't sing at all - I leave that to a trained professional.

When I have tried to play and sing - I can pull it off in 4/4 with sinple rhythm, but mix it up a little and I get confused and stop both.

I did sing harmony when I played Bass, but the lines I played were so simple you could do your taxes in your head while your playing them - ride the e-string with 8th notes :)

SRV's stuff blows my mind in the singing and playing two totally different things category.

I just can't play and sing at the same time... But my singing is very bad, so it's not a great loss... :D

I am under the advice of an attorney to NOT sing.
She was very clear on this point.

Attorney said:
NorM,
The Rocket Science thing, the 9 to 5. You're gonna wanna stick with that.
The Guitar Playing thing is a nice hobby.
As far as you singing, that is RIGHT OUT!

She went on to add that if I had any trouble understanding or remembering this that she would be happy to schedule me an appointment with a tattoo artist.

I have only recently been surprising myself at my ability to sing & play some complex things at the same time.

I could always manage some singing if the timing fell neatly within the guitar part. But lately I've been doing some disparate vocals & guitar lines and managing to pull them off.

The best thing is to just practice doing both. It's a long road, but it can be done!

I'm on that long road now. Have to sing backups, some of which are involved. Having a real time playing any lead lines and singing at the same time :(

I am mostly a vocolist/rhythm player but if have been doing it for 20 years so its easy for me but like i said i am no Shredder ,but yah the flow of the song and the lyrics and rhythm patterns all gel after you practice for a bit.

Like others have said, it's a practice thing - I can't improvise and sing at the same time, but I can play and sing Hendrix stuff and SRV and Rebel Rebel without trouble after ingraining the guitar parts into muscle memory - once the hands can work without me, I'm free to concentrate on keeping the pipes somewhere around the mark...

Playing guitar and singing is not too bad (not that I'm very good at either:eek: ), but playing bass and singing lead is a whole different story. I've tried it several times but never with any real success.

First I try and hear the entire song in my head. Then, I play the guitar parts and hear the lyrics, then I hear the vocal melody. Then I try and play and sing at the same time, and people cover their ears or point and laugh because I can't do either :)

I find that I have to know the guitar part inside out, and can strugggle with complicated rhythms but there is always a way around - I have also tried to play bass and sing - man no way - anyone who can do that!! As for drums.......! Oh sorry we're talkin musicians stuff here aren't we!
Personally I like singing and playing guitar and would rather create a good sounding song than a solo!:D
