I started recording a cover with a Precision with flats through an Ampeg SVT7Pro head and it sounded nice.

Then I had to switch the strings to some roundwounds for my band and was too lazy to put the flats on the bass again after the rehearsal. So I started over on the cover, this time with my Stingray. I recorded it all in one take so don't mind the mistakes.

Thanks. :)

The Precision sounds good but I like the Stingray version better - sounds more lively and in keeping with the music genre.

It would be interesting to hear this with slightly more bass boost and treble cut - though it sounds pretty good as it is.

The Ray would also sound v nice with flatwounds ;)

I recorded it again with a slight bass boost and a huge high boost, sounds crispy. :p

I love how the Stingray sounds in recordings, I just haven't figured how to make it sound nice in a live setting.

With all of my Music Man's, I start with everything at 50% and then adjust from there but most of the time I just leave the eq as is. Cuts through the mix and sounds great. I even do the eq on the board or my amp the same way that way I get the true sound of the bass coming through.

well... the first one has a great P-bass sound. The second has a great Stingray sound.

did you have rounds or flats on the stingray?

The P bass sounds like all P basses...nothing wrong with that.

The Ray has a lot more note definition; I can definitely hear a lot more going on.

Really? I think the Stingray really shines live. BTW, I like the Ray tone over the P in this recording. Much clearer, and of course, the ray tone is killer.

Is everything else really the same in the two mixes? To me the P-bass version sounds slightly fuller and nicer overall, though the bass of course is a tad muddy, like a warm cosy P-bass blanket. Would have been very interesting to hear the Stingray with a slight bass boost, then I would expect it to blow the P-bass out of the water, Stingray would definitely be my choice on a song and bassline like this!

Very interesting indeed, thanks for sharing and great playing.
The Stingray is an awesome bass.

Yeah, there might be a difference between the two recordings. I think on one of them I cut everything between 20hz and 100hz on the MP3 of the song itself to be able to lay down a fat bass track without clipping the mix or sounding muddy.

I've been the the Red Hot Chili Peppers gig last night (50k+ crowd!) and I liked how angry his Modulus sounded, I'll try to record this song again with more bass and make it sound more aggressive. :)

I consider all my "Leo Basses" to be an uber-tribe,
within which are 3 sub-clans: EBMM, F3nder, and
GnL. This breaks out as 10 Rays/Sterlings, 3 or 4
F3nders, and 2 GnLs.

Quantities semi-sorta speak for themselves ... in
that I almost always seek used gear and since MM
and Fender are widely available, between those 2
names the quantities show my preference. OTOH,
used GnLs are kinda scarce. Prolly woulda found
me a coupla more if not for the very slim pickinz.

Fully half of the Ray/Sterlings have piezo bridges,
and likewise about half of the F3nders. GnL offers
no piezo option, so that also keeps their sub-clan
to a definite minority.

If you remove the fretted basses, my tribe would
breakout out as 8 Ray/Sterlings, 2 or 3 F3nders,
and 2 GnLs ... and FLs are my Main Basses.

BTW [and more directly on-topic] my fretted P is
an '08 P-Deluxe ... way different from the usual
"less articulate" voice of a passive P. What with its
maple FB, monster 3-band and bridge humbugger
it's sorta F3nder's tribute to an SR4HS, not in any
way inferior or superior, just definitely different.
If there was ever a P for MM freaks, this one is it.
I'm pretty sure F3nder purists consider it an Idiot
Bastid Child :)
