i've never had any, but one way to avoid it like me, is to stretch your hands and fingers alot.

one way is to put both arms out to the side of you, to make a right angle, and bend your wrists down as far as they can go.

also, take your fingers and bend them back as far as u can..

one thing i do alot that will hurt untill your used to it is, bending your wrist down, and bedning all your fingers tward your writst

That really helps? I've been doing that ever since I was a kid just for fun! :p Most excellent. I was CALLED to play bass, then. ;)

Anyway, I stepped in a puddle today.

I had tendonitis in my left wrist, and it still hurts some times.

supposedly you are supposed to keep your wrist straight when playing, to avoid any excess stress.

i find that when im to play for extended periods of time, i put a wrist brace on, it leaves my fingers free to move about, but forces me to keep my wrist straight, after 10 minutes, i don't even notice it....

btw, it hurts like a mad biznatch to have tendonitis and keep playing...

take care of your wrists and hands. stretches, etc are great, do wrist curls with 5 pound weights to beef yourself up, that helps prevent too!

Do you play slap often? I had pain in my wrist for a while a short time ago, too. I did what I always do to pain - make it even worse and bear it. :p Anyway, the pain eventually left (or it's still here but I just don't notice it anymore). Mind you, I'm almost positive my method isn't recommended by your doctors. :p

sweet, i never thought about severing any nerves in my arm!

that would get rid of all the pain....

now let's see....how deep should the hedge trimmer go.??

Keep your wrists straight when playing. A lot of bassists use a bizarrely contorted right-hand technique where their hand is at a right-angle to their forearm. Do this and you're asking for trouble.

Left hand injuries are usually due to wearing the bass too low, forcing you to bend the wrist.

I developed carpal tunnes syndrom last summer as a result of 8-hour a day computer mouse use. The main causes were:

1. The mouse was far too small for my very large hands.

2. I was using very poor form; I was keeping the heel of my hand stationary while manipulating the mouse with my fingers.

It caused quite a bit of pain and nighttime numbness.

Always mover your arm from the shoulder when operating a mouse. You'll feel stupid at first, but you'll get used to it.

Avoid stretching or exercise that forces you to severly hyperextend your wrist. Also, many people hyperextend their wrists while sleeping. I wear a brace at night that prevents me from doing this.

Play lighter.

I struggled with CTS and Guyon Canal Syndrome (like CTS, but Ulner Nerve instead of the Median Nerve).

1) Use an ergonomic keyboard and lower your keyboard

2) Check out the wrist splints to wear at night (should be temporary). They limit the range of motion in your wrists and force them to stay straight.

3) Ditto on the keeping your wrists straight while you play. Your right hand should have no bend to it while you're playing.

4) A little more debate around this, but I take Vitamin B6 supplements. Lack of pyridoxine (B6) is thought to cause much carpel tunnel in most forms of medicine other than western conventional medicine. Be careful, too much of any B vitamin can be toxic.

I was once told that surgery was enevitable. My CTS has gone away almost completely by doing the above. And normally I do #1 and #3 always, #4 on and off, #2 maybe once or twice a year. No surgery needed - and I'm on a computer all day.

Good luck.

B6 is contained in beer.

Is this funny?

not in the least...

but this is:

one time while playing bass at a show, my nut broke at the G string during an excessively rowdy song, the piece went flying at first i thought it went into the crowd, but then the guitar stops and i look over and it hit my guitarist in the side of his forhead, causing bleeding. I told him to suck it up and be a man, and we continued the show, me without my G string:)eek: )
and him with blood dribbling down his face..

it was funny as hell to watch...

Are you playing metal or somethin'?

Happens even to the pro's.

Years ago Peter Gabriel was spinning his mike stand around and caught Tony Levin in the head with it mid song.

Ouch.
