I agree that the airlines are unreasonable sometimes, but in the past 2 years I have brought a guitar to the airport at least a dozen times and NEVER had a problem carrying it on.
I think it helps that I am usually travelling on Regional Jets (40-50 seaters) out of Raleigh-Durham as opposed to big planes out of NY/LA/SF etc. I carry a gig bag and don't draw attention to myself or the guitar. The one hassle I got doing this was at LaGuardia in NY, but I successfully argued that I had carried it on for the trip up from Raleigh the day before and unless the rule changed overnight I didn't understand why I couldn't go home the same way I came.

A few days ago we were talking about traveling with your bass. .............
Dave Marrota gave me a good tip. If you have to check a bass in a soft case, take the neck off. Haven't had to do that but I think I would if i had to.;-)

Uh...If you're willing to take the neck off, then you could definitely carry it on, in something like a gym bag or small duffel bag. Or even stuff it into your other luggage.

Flight case all the way, it's the only way to go... really do you want to remove the neck? I've got flight cases for all my keyboard gear, and I'm going to go ahead and have a couple built for my EBMM basses, just in case I ever have a fly date on bass.

Since you've got KB flight cases, take a look at a case you might already own, an SKB [or is it TKL, never could keep the two straight..] "medium keyboard rolling flight case". I got mine used, about $110 [real clean]. It's a molded ATA type [recessed] and it's just the perfect size into which to stuff a bass in its gig bag.

Since it's "just perfect", realize that there may be a few bags that don't fit. But I can put a K-Aces brand fake cowhide bag in there containing a Turner Ren'5, which is an inch or two longer overall than most solid body 35 inch bases, and is also about an inch wider. IOW, and 34" solid body should be a breeze in various commonly avaialble gig bags.

Now, if you really choose your other luggage carefully, dig this: At the arrival gate you remove the gig bagged bass from the flight case and wear it. The rest of your gaggle of well chosen bags goes into the wheeled flight case. OK, I admit the airport scene I just painted is pure speculation. I use the KB flight case to protect the gig bagged Ren'5 in back of my pickup truck, and I know it's an ATA approved case. That much is fact.
