This was posted on another board when I mentioned Casey's was used on EBMM guitars:

"Birchwood Casey's Gunstock Oil contains a toxic chemical soup. Everytime you play the guitar, this mess is released on your skin. Not good for your health."

Anyone have an opinion on this? Seems like a pretty strong statement.

I have an opinion. What a bozo.

Once the product cures on the neck, it should have no toxicity at all, and should not come off on your hands.

In fact the Material Safety Data Sheet says the product in its liquid form [pre-application, which has to have some volatile componds that gas off for the product to cure to a hard finish] is only mildly irritrating and at most could cause some skin irritation.

The whole thing is silly. You are probably exposed to more toxins riding in a new car for a day than playing an oiled neck for your entire life.

The only danger in playing EBMM oil finished necks is, you may lose your desire to play anything else.

If that's the case, then there should be a massive number of hunters out there that have been poisoned for decades, considering its primary purpose is gunstock oil.

Wouldn't be suprised if that post was from a competitor.

I agree with all that's been said. This guy was responding to my post in another forum when I recommended it as a possible substitute for Tung Oil.

I agree, but I must also admit I got quite a shock when I read the back of the packing of my B-C Oil :

(As best as I can recall) :
"WARNING : THIS PRODUCT IS KNOWN TO THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO CONTAIN CHEMICALS THAT CAUSE CANCER AND BIRTH DEFECTS"

And That's from B-C !

Fair enough, once cured all is OK......... but man, when applying, Gloves and a well ventilated room must be the go ! :)
(I'm especially cautious now that Mrs Dizzy now has another bun in the oven - Yup, All my Balls are workin' :D )

Damn near everything that markets in California is has that label. I re-roofed my house last year and the shingle packs stated that. If EBMM instruments supposedly "ooze" a toxic sludge, that phrase would be on the headstock instead of made in SLO :)

Send the keyboard chemical engineer our love.........

Don't drink it, apply it as tanning oil or hair growth formula and don't use it as a contraceptive and you'll be ok.....................

I think we've been over this before - If you aren't in California then you are fine :D

Nope, well clear of California here in Oz ......

With all the toxicity fears, birth defects and Arnie as Governor... California could well be the venue for his next movie !!.........

TOTAL RECALL 2 - Quaid vs the BC EBMM Mutants! :D :D
