Are SR5 pre-amps supposed to have center detents on all 3 tone pots? Because mine doesn't have center detents. There is a continuous taper.

Take the knobs off, center them (you will feel the detent) and then put them back on being careful not to press them down as you are tightening the set screw.

Someone has probably had the knobs off before and didn't follow the proper procedure for re-installing them.

If the knobs have been removed the put back on not having the shaft in the detent position that can/will happen.

yours has a center detent, this is how to fix it. loosen the dome knob and lift it 1/16 off the pot and you'll have a center detent. Sometimes the knobs are pushed down too far onto the pot and the center detent acts like there is not one.DJ

I still don't get the physics of it all... but never mind... I can just chalk it up to magic...
It just has to do with the way the pots are designed, I believe. At the midpoint detent, the shaft on the pot drops down slightly (I think). So, if it is turned off-center when you tighten the knobs on, and the knobs are down flush with the washer. Then, the knob/shaft can't drop down at the midpoint (or it's something like that).

A few years ago, I bought a used Stingray 5 that had the "smooth turning" EQ knobs (no center detent). It had 1 or 2 other issues, so I sent it into Jon to be serviced. Jon very nicely told me about the knob tightening deal. I forget what else was wrong, but the bass was sent back just like new.
