Wait. You're asking how a John Petrucci-spec'd guitar does high gain? :p

This is a guy whose pedal board has one main clean sound, one high-gain rhythm, and two high-gain lead tones. So, we're talking about a guy who probably uses his clean tone 25% of the time or less. I don't think you're going to have to worry about the high-gain performance of the JPX.

The 25th Anniversary guitar is a beast that pretty much does it all. I think the chambering will be fine on the JPX.

Why would you say that?

It's just an adjustment for the player. Steve Morse has a chambered Y2D he plays, and he uses gobs of gain. He says it's just easier to push that one over the edge than the standard one, so different.

Anyhow, the JPX is half chambered so you're going to have less of that effect than on the 25th.

I've played both a Reflex and a 25th through a Dual Rectifier. Tonal heaven! Plus John Petrucci uses tons of gain, and if it works for him, then it should be great for high gain.

I JUST got back from demoing a JPX through an EVH5150 III, and it is amazing at high gain. That Crunch Lab is a BEAST!

It's not a hollow or semi-hollow body. There's no problem with feedback or excessive resonance. If you were to actually find the volume/displacement of the chambers it would be tiny.

When I first spotted a 25th here in Sin City, I gave it a nice test drive through an Egnater and it responded to high gain incredibly !!

It has many small chambers instead of a single big one precisely to allow it to perform well in high gain situations.

Hendog,

The JPX is, in as few words as possible, the best guitar I've ever owned for high gain. I don't think you should have any concerns about the effects of the chambering on high gain sounds. It simply works and works well.

There aren't any feedback issues like with hollow-body guitars. The chambering adds resonance, but doesn't *amplify* the sound like in a hollow-body (335, Ric, etc.)

That being said, the attack is still very tight on both the JPX and 25th. They seem a little *louder* to my ears, and the sustain is unending (think Spinal Tap :D)

Here is my final quick assessment:

JPX + Mark V (Extreme mode) = WIN!
25th + Mark V (Extreme mode) = WIN!

The JPX will hold up under high gain, absolutely! If you watch the making of the JPX vid on you tube, you'll see that the chambering is actually small diagonal channels. Similar to the 25th but less of them. It is not enough to give it a feed back problem. I have another guitar that has a large chamber in it and does not suffer from any high gain problems either that a hollow body would.
