Alright. I had previously posted about changing my sterling HS's pickups because I was unhappy with the zingy tone and the boomy lows of the sterling.

I changed amps and got a EBS fafner. Oh my. You can run a violin through this things and it sounds like a good bass. As I mentioned in the previous thread, my rig was is hi-fi, and the fafner is very hi-fi as well. But for some reason the Sterling--or any other bass--just sound wonderful. No more boomy lows, no more zingy thin highs. I increase the Drive on the fafner a bit, the tubes kick in, and ooooh laa laaa. I get fat, punchy, defined, growly (almost Ken Smith like burp) tone. It'll cut through stacks and stacks of Marshalls.

Anyway, just an update

Well, my stingray fretless works fine with the SWR. I get to use all the features on the SWR--compression, eq, enhancer, etc. But with the Sterling, I had to bypass evyerything and still I couldn't get it to sound decent.

Anyway, try the Fafner. It is a monster yet hi fi. I was thinking about the Aggie DB 751 (or 750). But people kept complaining that it sounded kind of pillowy and people mainly used it as a power amp, bypassing the preamp section. If so, that would be one expensive power amp.

That's just hard to believe that an amp can be useless with one bass but great with another.. The two aren't voiced that differntly only thing I ever find is if it's too agressive which is why I lie the sterling just cut a little mids..

Good choice, mate.

The Fafner is a beautiful amp. I play one myself.

Simple and straightforwar yet effective.
Love the Drive-Pot to add a bit of "dirt" for heftier rocktones.
And the semiparametric midrange makes dailing in the tone for every location really simple...

The comp sounds very musical too...

And not to forget: It goes to eleven!!!! One louder!!!! :D:D:D

spencer it is very possible that a stingray may sound differently that a sting ray.. Plus this is his personal preference and what makes him happy. THese threads get bad when someone challenges a preference
