I was wondering the same thing. I just stepped up to 10's on my ASS and I didn't change any setup at all, however, it is a hardtail. It plays perfectly just the way it is. I'll be curious to see more replies.
When you change the string gauge, the only things you perhaps have to do is :
1. adjust the neck relief. With the Music Man truss rod, it is so easy.
2. check the intonation
Most of the time, when you go from 9-42 to 10-46, you don't have to change anything.
In my case, I use 10-52 thus I have to adjust the neck relief (with 10-52 you have much more tension thus the action is higher if you don't adjust the truss rod).
TNT : if I use 10-52, it is because I play slide and I use open tunings. For instance, with the low E string, if I tune to D, when I fret a note it will be in tune. If I use a 42 or 46 string for low E, when I tune to D, all the notes I will fret will be out of tune because my fingers are quite strong, thus I apply to much tension.
Thanks Fbecir!
TNT, even though I love the way the axis feels with 9's, I'm switching to 10's because all my other guitars have them and switching to the axis from something like the JPX makes the strings feel like rubber bands.
TNT,
Since I've started playing these guitars(Balls), I can't put them down. Consequently, my fingers are in the best shape of my life. 9's are just starting to feel too flimsy to me. It's a really good problem to have.
Thanks
When I got my Silo new I'm guessing it came with either 9s or 10s......I use 11s so I changed them as soon as I got home with the guitar. I've had absolutely zero issues from the nut, neck or intonation. I adjusted the bridge slightly to give me more height but other than that nothing needed tweaking. Not the norm actually since pretty much every other guitar I've had required more tweaking. I never use a trem but with the last two MM guitars I've had I think I prefer them over the hardtail. Reason.......I can raise the action higher without running out of saddle screw length.....I like the action pretty high. Another reason is the big sustain block that really has a nice tone and stability.
