Choosing the right strings

Hi,
I just bought an Ibanez RG370dx, and i was thinking of buying thicker strings, as i find that the low d string (drop d tuning) hits the fretboard easily when played making it sound rubbish. I know i can raise the bridge but it makes my high strings too high from the board making it difficult to play.
Would it be best to buy thiker strings so that the d string would b tighter? If so what shall i go for?
Any help would be great, im a bit of a beginner when it comes to these things (if you havn't guessed) so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
