Cleaning/fixing up old stingray

Just recieved a transred stingray, maple neck, love it! However the fretboard was coated in dirt and frets were corroded. I took some steel wool to it and frets cleaned up beautifully, however some of the dirt is still on the lower frets and I don't sand it too much. I'm usually fine with dirt but this is someone elses dirt! Should I just go at it a little more?

Also what's the whole gunstocks deal again? Is it NESSISARY, and how do you apply it again?

Also the pots on the 3band are giving that worn out center detent feeling, I have never had a stingray with that problem
but I have felt some. I'm not sure wether or not I'll fix it, but something about it just feels loose, if there was a simple way to fix it, would anyone care to let me know how?

Careful with steel wool. There are magnets in the pickups and you don't want those little bits of steel getting in there. Not good if that happens.

Take the neck off is the best thing, then get you a Scotchbrite pad and go at it easy. Should come off unless it's a real biohazard.

Check the EBMM video for applying the oil/wax.

With the pots, just take the knobs off and make sure nothing is corroded or otherwise hosed up. When you put them back on, don't force them all the way down - about halfway, then tighten. If the center detents aren't right, then you're too far down on the stem. Loosen, lift, tighten then test again.

Thanks, I read up a little on the gunstock oil. Seems very simple so I just picked some up and yes I did take the neck off when using steel wool

I gave the fretboard another scrubbing with some steel wool. The dirt just don't want to budge, so I just left it. Gave it a coat of tru oil and its great. However I coudln't find anything wrong with the electronics, they just feel worn out is all. It'll work for me.

I bought a Stingray a while back. One of the pots was missing the center detent. I seem to recall that there were plastic washers under the knobs and one of them ended up in the wrong spot. It somehow made the pot feel bad. Might be worth looking into

ya just work at it. it'll come off. the gunstock oil and wax will make the neck silky smooth when youre done

I used some Murphy's oil soap to clean my maple fretboard before I put on my new set of coated slinkies. Maybe that will help?

Regarding the neck. I don't know if the areas you're cleaning are finished or not. I had a warwick bass a while back that i bought used. The body was unfinished ash with an unfinished maple cap. You were supposed to wax it all the time. The previous owner didn't. It was filthy. Someone suggested to me to use regular old Zippo lighter fluid applied to a rag to clean it up. It worked like a charm. Maybe it will help you clean up your neck. I have used this on the backside of unfinished Stingray necks. I don't know about maple fingerboards, though.
