I was just wondering > is there a better way to clean the maple neck & fretboard?

I'm using lemon-oil very often (I polish every time I change the strings which is every 3-5wks), but the wood is getting darker and darker > starts to look kinda filthy actually.

How do you guys cope with this problem?

Have you read the FAQs?

Every 3-5 wks sounds like you are over doing it to me. I cleaned my SS (now my son's) when I first got it and did the Gunstock Oil/Wax treatment. The neck was looking rather dull. After the treatment, it looked fabulous! It's probably getting about time to clean the neck again, but it's probably been a year. I wipe down my guitars real well each time after playing them.

If you do use the gunstock oil, just put a light coat on and let it dry real well. Then use the wax.

At the Musicman FAQ they're talking about Murphy Oil Soap and Birchwood-Casey Gunstock Oil > these products are not available in Holland.

Will other products made by other brands suffice?
Example: Johnson Wax(Pledge) is an american manifacturer of cleaning products > they also sell in the Netherlands...

I had the same problem when I tried to order directly from Birchwood-Casey. However, after much searching on the net, I found Cascade Firearms in Washington State (cascadefirearms.com).

Click on the Shooting link on the home page and that will lead you to Birchwood-Casey products. They shipped to Canada with no problems. I think it took 2 or 3 weeks.

Since the Canadian dollar is strong these days, I'd order larger bottles of the oil and wax, but even the 4 to 6 ounce bottles should last forever.

Before doing the wax/oil treatment, use some diluted Murphy's oil soap and a toothbrush to clean the fretboard. It makes the grey gunk disappear in an instant.

I got the Birchwood from Sports Authority, which was available online as well. I'm not sure if they ship internationally or not.

When I called EB, they said I could use any carnauba wax. You could propably substitute a different gunstock oil, but I'm not sure about this.

i wouldn't use lemon more than maybe 2 times a year. its been shown to be damaging to wood in the long run by over doing it. you can use 000 steel wool lightly on the neck and fretboard and that will clean up some of the dirt. but one thing we all have to face with these guitars is the neck will get dark and dirty. no way around it. birchwood casey's gunstock wax should be availible at a local hardware store even in canada i would imagine......do you guys have the "right to bare arms" over there? i don't own any but gunstock wax is a gun accessory i guess......
