coating a signature on a Music Man Petrucci

Hey I have a John Petrucci signature Music Man guitar. I just got it signed on the last day of the Progressive Nation Tour and I wanted to know if anyone out there has had success with coating their Petrucci signature guitar. My biggest concern is that if I use the wrong kind of coating that it will ruin the original coating on the guitar itself. So if anyone has had success with coating a signature on a Music Man guitar please let me know.
