OK all you ebmm historians. im pretty new to all this so i figured id ask the experts. I have only see this Brown color a few times. i have heard it refered to as rootbeer. its like a dark walnut stain.

what is the translucent brown's name and what years was it made through?
did they make a 5string in that color?
sorry for having to show my ignorance but this color is everthing i have ever wanted and i couldnt find the info on it anywhere. thanks in advance for any info

That's a good example from "your idol" - it IS in fact a pre-EB color they used to call "walnut" and it was basically a trans-brown, so it looked like walnut - same as Fender used to do years ago. Find a "natural" beater Stingray 5 and have it refinished in that color! Make sure you get one with a standard non-matching headstock. I used to have an old Sabre in that color!

You can always go for a refinish. There's a name that's been kicked around that does an excellent job, but I forget who it is. He even did a trans black/brown that was posted in the picture thread a year back I think.

Anyone know who I'm very vaguely talking about?

Michael Dolan here in Santa Rosa, CA has done some refinishing for me. He also did Ben's (formerly) Stealth Bongo HS in white sparkle. Yum. He does excellent and very clean work.

sub question to the original question

WOW awesome info guys. now i currently have an all black sr5h.
i have personally refinished guitars before and with the one black one i redid i found underneath my black enamel (namely a p**vy raptor for the sake of this story) i found 2 pieces of wood glued together in the center.
If i strip my black ray for this refinish im not going to find this am i? im looking for a consistant top grain not a seam in the middle. If its going to be solid at the top you just may see this refinish happen because i love this look. would be nice to see it in production again so i dont have to refinish my bass (HINT HINT!!!)

I have only refinished cheapies with good results but ive never done a trans job and im not going to trade in my communications job in for a butchers position

It is very likely that your black ray does not have a 1-piece body.

unfortunately thats what i figured...

you only put vinyl tops on cars with lumpy roofs
you only paint 2 pieceers in opaque colors...such is life...guess i gotta open my wallet again..unless anyone wants to trade a natural 5 for a black 5 :D

I had a Black SR5 some years ago that I wasnt that happy with, so I shopped for a replacement, and was told by the senior idiot salesperson at our city's "Bass experts" store that - (get this) "They save all the sh#t wood for the black ones, thats why they are 2/3 part bodies, and sound bad!" ??

God, I miss that guy! ..... such wisdom and sales technique!

If you stripped the finish, and found that it WAS a 2/3 peice body, it will still look pretty good. But if, at that stage, you werent happy with it, there are plenty of other colours and finishes

lol..gotta love shady tactics! some sales people kill me.

anyway ill probably trade for a natural 5 or keep ol' blackie and save for the next 2 years and get a natural to do.

while im sure a 2 or 3 piece wouldnt look bad in trans brown if im gonna do it im gonna get it EXACTLY the way i like it
