Could someone with a little knowledge explain exactly how the compensated nut works to better intonate the instrument?

I notice they have more of a "V" shape cut, instead of a "U" shape.
If anyone could enlighten a fellow bass player, that would rock

The compensated nut compensates for the increase in string tension (most notable while playing lower frets) while chording or playing single notes.

Chords including open strings sound more "in tune" because of the new nut.
