do i need to buy a bartolini preamp too or will the pickup go well with the existing preamp? i've heard mixed opinions on this.

nothing like destroying the resale value of your bass.

Oh, relax. Nothing has been destroyed. As long as he keeps the original pickup, everything is cool. And, if he doesn't--big deal.

Which is worse--going through 20 basses in a year to find the "one," or finding the "one," and tweaking it until you're happy with it? If he's not worried about resale (some people hang onto basses, ya know), why are YOU worried about his resale value?

I didn't see anyone blasting Psychopet or Mobay for destroying the resale value of their basses when they swapped pickups. They might be MM pickups, but they aren't the original pickups, so there is no less drop in resale value.

No one gave me any crap when I drilled two 3/8" holes in each of my Bongos to install recessed straplocks. Why not? If anyone destroyed resale value, it was ME. Anyone want to make something of it?

I think it's high time for people who don't have anything productive to add to threads about replacement pickups to stay out of the threads about replacement pickups.

For those of us happy with the original Musicman electronics, we're set. But, if not, who really cares if somone swaps out a pickup? They aren't religious artifacts--they're musical instruments.

Not nasty, just open and honest. ;)

Or, at the very least, some of us are just annoyed we didn't get invited to join the secret society of "We Who Must Keep All Music Man Basses Stock."

I mean, do you guys have fezes and tattoos, or just a secret handshake?

I don't have a tattoo, but I have the others and more. I kind of like being part of a group that helps crippled and burned children at no cost to their families.

I couldn't agree more. I bought my 5 MMs to keep and to play, not to hang up in a gallery, as an example of late 20th century luthiary, or to keep locked up in a safe deposit waiting for the value to go up so I can resell them. I'm really not interested in resale value, I bought them as the tools of my trade and as such I want them to sound as I need. If this requires a little experimentation and modification with pick-ups and electronics, so be it. If someone else has been there before, then it's fair to ask and share the experience.

At the end of the day that's what a Forum is all about, to discuss and share, and before anyone tells me again that EB pay for the bandwidth, for which we are very grateful, they should consider that these sorts of discussions provide useful market feedback. I'm quite sure that this site is paid for out of the marketing budget, so let them get value for their investment. I'm quite sure that they are not just interested in what the next fashion for pick-guard colours will be.

Somebody apparently didn't see "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." THOSE guys with fezes and tattoos.

Not the guys on the little bikes with the buckets. Those guys rock.

I have swapped out the pups on one of Petrucci's and don't believe the resale value went down. I have 3 Pets and will keep them all. The one I swapped the pups out on is simply for a tone I was after. I got it with other pups other than the originals. Simple as that. My bongo will stay original and I'm happy with it. I think, if it is yours, and you want to paint it pink have a bunch of dead squirrels on it, that's your business. If I feel I need to replace a pup or other part, I will to make me happy. Sorry if the original value "goes down". If it gets me the tone I am after, I hit the lottery......and that value is worth more to me than the resale of an axe I plan on keeping anyhow. My 2 pennies.

To paraphrase yet again something Todd Rundgren once said, "If I want to get a certain noise, and I have to hit the mixing board with a hammer to get it, I'll go find a hammer."

And I remember when Ian Paice of Deep Purple used to nearly destroy his drums at the end of the show, he'd kick them over and bash them and go all Townsend on them, and critics would give him crap about it. He said, "They're mine and I'll bloody well kick them if I want to."

That is my entire opinion about this. It's YOUR instrument, not mine. I like the stock electronics, but if I ever got a hankerin' to slap something else in one of my basses, I damned sure would.

Resale etc: I have never thought twice about the resale value of anything I owned, except maybe my house & cars. But then, I am one of those guys who keeps his stuff. That being said, anyone want to buy an ART SGX2000 Express? ;) :D

Hey Mobay, a fellow travelling man, eh?

Used to do so. Not really active now other than to support the children.
