was just going through some songs with it...now I'm playing my ESP lynch model...the action is just sooooo much better on the lynch it's not even funny...I can only get the axis so lo..and the tension feels like suspension cables on the golden gate..lol

seriously though..I like the guitar and all..I really love the way it looks..and the three way switching is great...but the more I battle with the high action from 12th fret on up and the really high tension (bending's a little difficult in that area as well) the more I think maybe it was an impulse buy I made a year ago that I shouldn't have..maybe I shoulda gone with the petrucci instead?

I don't know...I'm just rambling I guess....

I have both an Axis and a Lynch Skulls & Snakes model. They are definitely two completely different guitars. The neck on the Lynch is, for me, a little more comfortable -- the wide & slim neck is a pleasure to play, and is a far cry from the narrow, thicker Axis. But the set-up on your Axis sounds a little hinkey. I don't think it should be that bad. My Axis and my Lynch both are strung with 11s and have the same action. You might be noticing the huge 6100 Dunlop frets on the Lynch more. The Axis does not have frets nearly as big. My two cents.

I think it does need to be setup..and I'm damned if I can figure out how the hell to do it..lol...tried fartin' around with the truss rod and that doesn't seem to be lowering the action on the higher frets at all...

thing is, I was in a guitar center in PA a couple weeks back and there was a REALLY low tuned axis there..and I plugged it into a 5150 combo..anywho, the action was fantastic...so I was rip roarin' away...I come home and play mine and it seems like I need to hold the strings down with a vice =( if I mess with the truss rod too much, I get wicked buzz...but the action on the upper frets is still horrible...

thoughts on how I can fix this? I guess what I'm asking is, other than the truss rod adjustments, what can I do to a) lower the action without having it buzz, and b) get rid of that wicked tension?

the lynch and the axis are two totally different axes, you're right, red...but I like the feel of the axis neck..not more or less, it's just different from the lynch..it's the frigign' action and the tension I can't get past =(

thanks for the input guys...I think you're right though..it's obvious that I don't know what the hell I'm doing..heheh..

I've considered putting new pups in it for awhile but when this problem cropped up, I was thinking why bother when I may wanna just unload it and get another guitar....but I'm going to wait and see...

never ran into this problem before..but I've always had fully floating floyd roses that could be raised AND lowered....the trem on the axis is another animal (it's an entirely different kind of flying...altogether..hehe)..

i highly recommend a "good" setup.

before i learned how to do my own setups i would get soooooooo pissed when id play an axe in the store that felt awesome, then went home to play the exact same guitar and get frustrated and scream "why does my <enter guitar name here> suck when the ones at the store feel awesome?"

id really look into sending it to EB and have Jon hook you up. Ive read many times that pimps the hell out of your axe.

but other than the obvious adjustments I'm at a loss....so gettin' it to someone who knows what they're doing is probably going to be my last resort...at which point, I still won't know what the hel I'm doing...and thenI'll be dependent....lol...

I also feel as if I shouldn't have to go through shipping it out to california to EBMM to get a relatively brand new (and not exactly cheap) guitar 'set up' properly....know what I'm sayin?

If you'd put as much effort into finding a local setup guy as you do bitching on this board, you'd have that baby up and running by now.

On a serious note, I use a local guy who is really good. He actually makes you play a bit so he can see how heavy-handed you are before he does the setup. (In addition to grilling you on what kind of strings you prefer, what kind of material you play, how low you want it, etc.)

I took one of my [inferior brand] guitars to him and I thought it was setup pretty well but needed a little tweaking. When I got it back it felt like a whole new axe, and a much improved one at that.

But these forumites have got me thinking about taking over those duties for myself. After all, it can't be that hard to take a few measurements, turn a few screws, and then test it, right?

when you get that axis set up right it will probably be your favorite guitar. the neck is a little narrow but once you get used to it you will never look back. if you sell that guitar you will regret it.

Seting up your guitar regularly is just part of the deal. Occasionally every guitar needs a good setup.

Before selling that axe I'd spend the $40 and get it done right. Alternately you can invest that money in a good book (e.g. the Guitar Player Repair Guide, etc.) and a couple of gauges/rulers and learn to do them yourself. It's not rocket science and you'll find it pretty rewarding once you learn how.
