Consistency, and a thank you (NGD!)
A couple of months ago, my beloved MM Albert Lee HH was stolen. It was a very special instrument to me; out of all non-custom guitars I have, this is the only one that just feels perfect out of the box. There was no fret buzz anywhere, and she sounded very punchy. And as often when an instrument feels so special, one can't help but wonder; did I luck out, and will I ever be able to replace it?
I took a leap of faith and got another, second hand Al HH, this time with a trem. I was, I won't deny it, a little worried. Would the trem make it sound that much different? Would it not play as well? Am I really stuck with black as color?
I received it yesterday and well... I am very, very happy.
I took the strings out, tightened everything on her, polished the frets, lemon-oiled her fingerboard, screwed the trem claw all the way to the body. That rosewood neck is, as always, stunning.
She screams. Sounds a little brighter than my old hardtail. Maybe a little tighter too? But no worse, certainly. That neck feels exactly as it used to.
Apprehensions gone, Frenchman happy. I'm too pragmatic (not to mention cynical) to be a fanboy, but last night after having re-strung her, I was very glad MusicMan was able to produce such consistently good instruments. Thank you.
