Hi guys some help please.

I've just gotten myself a new RAy34 which is excellent, see my new bass day thread. Here's a thing I've just tried to fit a Hipshot drop D tuner to it which was fitted to my SUB and the holes don't line up. This is the standard Hipshot that fits 'Rays, does anybody know if there is one that will fit or will I have to start drilling some extra holes?

The SBMM most probably are not fitted with tuners made by Schaller. The Hipshots are made to replace MM's Schaller tuners or other well known products. You'll have to investigate with Hipshot.

For those who are looking to do this upgrade this is the reply I got from Hipshot

"Thank you for your question about our Bass Xtenders.

I'm afraid that you will need to resort to drilling new holes. The Xtender we suggest for your bass would be our BT7, mainly for the key size and shape."

we use a tuner that is made overseas and does not line up exactly with the Schaller imprint - as you already know.
options are purchase a new D extender or simply fill in the existing holes with glue and toothpicks, redrill new holes, reinstall. Not super difficult to do if you have some basic wood working skills.

Ooh I hate quoting myself, but needs must. BT7 ordered today for $50 inc delivery :) Got a line on a used black pearloid p/g too which I'll post photos of if I get it.

I have asked the Hipshot folks for the last 3 years why don't they make a footprint tuner to replace the ones on imported basses.

EBMMs and other top of the line basses are made with good tuners and there isn't a need to switch them. The imports however could benefit from better ones.

Anyone feel the need to yank the Schallers out of your EBMM?

Why don't they offer one? I'll never understand.

Just an update on the drop D. The BT7 arrived today and I fitted it immediately. Three of the holes lined up perfectly and the last one (right, top edge) was only about 1 1/16" out, if that. As Hipshot said, it is a really good match.
