Hi Folks,

Anyone here use a cool cat chorus with their bass?
Just wondering as I really like the effect with guitar.

Any suggestions for a suboctave pedal - I know that the POG is a nice pedal that tracks quite well. Are there others that you are using that works well and doesn't get too muddy?

Most times I directly plug in, but I am in an experimenting mood and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

Shepp...

Any suggestions for a suboctave pedal

I've tried quite some sub octave pedals, when I switched back from playing 5 string to playing 4 string, just to be able get lower on certain song parts. There were only two pedals that worked to my satisfaction, and I've acquired both.

Try to find an Ampeg SCP-OCT. They are not made anymore and pretty rare, but it's simply the best octaver out there. Fast tracking and smooth tone. Depending on how clean you play, it tracks down to the g, even the f on the E string, while most others stop at the h on the A string. The unit is stylish, bulky, sturdy, heavy, and expensive.

Good runner up is the MXR bass octave. Also not made anymore, but easier to get. Fast tracking, good tone. If it has a good day, it tracks down to the a. The unit is a standard small MXR housing and pricing is very reasonable.

Hey Oli
In your search for extreme low-ness did you ever try the EBS Octave pedal, it seems to recieve some good reviews. I've never tried it, but based on other people's comments I'd recommend giving it a look.

Is this a new scale? :D
Just kinda asking....

I'm lost...

Naturally I've read those rave reviews as well and I did also try the EBS Octave pedal but I didn't like it. I think it's not better than most others, and overrated. Unfortunately, that's my perspective on pretty much everything I ever tried from EBS... neither their Auto Wah nor their bass overdrive were outstanding either.

But you really have to try all those units yourself. Sometimes it comes down to how you play and what you want to do with the effect.

BTW, talking of chorus: I have a T.C. Chorus on my pedalboard, but didn't use it anymore since I got the MXR phase 90. The phaser is a different sound, but IMO works better for bass in live situations. Recently I put the MXR phase 100 on the board, replacing the 90, and it sounded even better live.

Excellent Oli.

I'll give it a whirl and try out some other pedals as well.

What do you suggest for a dirty grit sound - not overdrive or distortion, but a mean in your face tone - Sansamp?

Thanks,

Shepp..

I was surprised when I owned mi first amp, behringer 3000xt, which had suboctave in it, how good it actually was... clean and could reach g without breaking up much...

I play finger style and you really need to get used to how to play using certain effects... you pluclk hard with a pick and im pretty sure the best octaver might have some trouble in the low register
