I went to the Hollywood Guitar Center this afternoon. I was just killing time playing around with the EBMM guitars (my local GC never has any). The 20th Anniversary Silo is pretty awesome... to bad it was missing an A string.

I bought some Wonder Wipes and some Super Slinkys, and on my way out I figured I would check out the basses. They actually have a great selection of EBMM basses. They had several Stingrays and Bongos and a Sterling that had two big-ass deep body scratches  . However, what caught my eye was a Dargie Stingray tucked in the corner. It was the H H Model, and when I picked it up, I noticed it was a fretless.

I had never played a EBMM fretless before, and I have to truly admit that it was the best feeling bass guitar I have ever played. Don't tell my brother, but it felt even better than his fretless Alembic. I don't know if it was just because the action was set just right or because it was fretless... but it felt and sounded WAY better than the other Stingrays, including the 30th Annivesary.

The price was actually pretty nice too - it was the same as the standard Stingrays! I had a hard time putting it back.... but I figured the divorce would cost alot more than the Stingray in the long run.

I am not really much of a bass player although I do own a Stingray and I like to play it a bit. But, if you real players are looking for an awesome fretless, I would head down to Hollywood before that baby is snatched up.

Sweet! Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll pop by tomorrow and have look. If it's still there, pics will follow. :D

I don't know if it was just because the action was set just right

I imagine that a green fretless bass without pointy bits would not get much playing time from the average GC wank-style customer. That's probably the reason why it played so nice. Actually, all EBMM basses come set perfectly from the factory, but what happens to them in stores can be a worry.

I was there last week. I played that bass. It felt nice. Although I couldn't put down that bongo. I had a bit of confusion with the GC guys there. Anywho... i got my DD bongo on the way and I'll post the pics and the story when it arrives.

I don't know. It's just not the same without the multiple inlays.

I completely agree with Tiff -- it is absolutely gorgeous with the one inlay near the headstock. That is one sexy bass.

Is the fretboard pau ferro? It is a very nice color with Dargie Green.

That was exactly how the bass at the Hollywood GC looked, except that it was an H H config. Not sure what a pau ferro fretboard is.

It's just the type of wood. It's popular for fretless boards and it's lighter in color than rosewood, so I thought it probably pau ferro.

I've seen that bass on the net before, I think it was at the Dudepit. And it is the coolest blank plank fretless EVER!!!! That single inlay at the position that it is, is what makes it cool. With all the inlays,it would be to crowded. At the twelfth would be aestheticly incorrect in my opinion. What they did here is the best possible option I think. I prefer lines on my fretless basses, but if I got a chance to get one of those I would. :)

NB! I think someone from EBMM have been on the forum before and informed us that the unlined fretless would have a single inlay at the first fret.

Here are some pics of said bass. Not bad at all! Average weight, good balance, very nice tone (tho I wasn't able to play it that much).

Clicky on pics for... bigger pics!
