I've had this second hand Steve Morse model for years and was wondering when it was manufactured. The serial number is 88354. It has a tremolo.

That # comes back to a Trans Purple Axis, not a Morse

Hmm... I've attached a couple of pictures so you can see for yourself.
Back of the headstock shot isn't very clear, but you can make out the serial number easily.

It definately is 88354.

Why would an Axis have the same serial number as my steve morse model ?

More likely, your Morse has an Axis neck, I would think...

Since when are the serial numbers stamped in the back of the headstock and not on the neck plate?

It's not an Axis neck, as the headstock suggests..
No markings on the neck plate either.

As I said I've had this guitar for a number of years, I purchased it second hand from a dealer in 1993. I don't know much about it's history but I was told that the original owner purchased it when they first became available.

Also note that mine is a 6 bolt neck attachment, from 1992 onwards Music Man began using a 5 bolt neck attachment with a sculptured neck joint. This would mean that my guitar would have been manufactured approximately between 1987 - 1991/92.

Other major difference is the tremolo, I think the current are using floyd rose systems.

It's an awesome guitar to play and I'm grateful I could get my hands on one of these.

I am Still curious of when the guitar was manufactured. Anyone got any ideas ?

Of course - the trem in the body shot should have given it away as an early model, but I wasn't paying attention... I guess either Jon's dyslexic and entering the wrong serial number or there's an error in the old records. It's still cool to have one of the old Schaller equipped models... They didn't make those ones long before they switched to a Floyd Rose, so yours is probably '87 or '88, but Jon should be able to give you the born date for your serial number even if the model's incorrectly recorded...

It may have been made in 88, as the first two numbers in the serial suggest ??

It is a nice guitar but unfortunately the original owner didn't really look after it, there is some minor chips in the finish but it's pretty much in the same condition as it was when I purchased it 11 years ago.

One thing I would like to know if it's ok to use some WD40 on the switches ?, they are rather stiff and it's difficult to switch between different pickups while I'm playing...

It looks as if it was made in 1988, and is the 354th of that year. The reason it comes up as an Axis is probably because of a duplicate serial number when we switched to putting the S/N on the neck plate.
