Hey guys,

I'm missin' the Axis Super Sport in Blue Dawn that I had some time back and have always wanted another MM.

Right now, I have quite a few guitars. My main axe is a Les Paul Std that is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played or owned. I play it almost exclusively simply because all the other guitars that I have just can't cut it. They all sound pretty good, but the LP is something "special". Probl because of the PU's, wiring, etc that i have in it.

Anyway, I used to think "the more the guitars the better", but now I'm starting to think, "why have so many guitars that are cool but just average sounding?" I'd rather have way fewer guitars in trade for a few that just KILL.

So, I think I have decided to sell off many of my guitars to support this idea! I have a strat that is really nice, but it just doesn't have the sound that *I* want. I'm really picky about a strat sound, and I usually don't want the same thing in a strat that most do. I don't play blues, so I want a strat that "rocks". I don't want that thin clacky strat sound. My strat is thin in general, and even w/ a SD Hot Rails in it, with a 500K pot, it's really just more of the same.

But it would be nice to have a guitar that gave me the strat sound that I want, PLUS maybe the other strat sounds that I don't use, but are still there for recording, etc.

Anyway, I've always looked at the Luke, but was kinda turned off by the body style. I've had experiences with EMG's, and I don't mind them at all. But it was only until recently that I've learned just how amazing and versatile the guitar is. I think really, it's the perfect choice.

HOWEVER, I can't rule out a JP6 or another ASS. It seems the most affordable one is a used ASS, but ones that float my boat don't come around often enough.

The most expensive one i've found that really is nice is a used BFR Luke. Aside from looks, do I really "need" a BFT? Just how much better do they play or sound? Probl not enough. But they are beautiful. Another tough call is a 2007LE Blue Dawn Luke vs a Luke Blue w/ matching headstock and PIEZO. I think having the Piezo makes the guitar the ultimate tool, but I have a really nice Acoustic already... so is it a need? No. Will I use it? Maybe, but not a guarantee.

I had a Blue Dawn ASS and loved it, but had to sell it, not wanting to. I loved the finish, but it always was in the back of my mind that many people really don't like anything "sparkle". So I do I want another sparkle guitar?

And about the body shape of the Luke... they always seemed kind of big to me. I held one once, and remember LOVING the neck. I love any neck that has a V profile, so that was a bonus. But I couldn't remember what the body looked like in person. I seem to think that the bodies aren't as "Big" as they look in the pictures.

I played a JP once at GC and thought it was awesome. The neck was great, though not my ideal neck, but it was just fine. I'm not THAT picky. I thought the guitar was very "powerful" though. I didn't give it best run down only cuz I wasn't really interested in that moment. I wish I had put it thru it's paces now. But I walked away thinking that the guitar was more of a "Shredder" guitar, and that It wouldn't be as versatile as I needed it to be.

Same for the Axis SS I had. I loved it, but I must say one of the reasons I chose to sell that one was because the PU's seemed kinda dark. The bridge position was great, but the others weren't as usable to me simply because they seemed too dark. I couldn't justify investing $250 in PU's in such an expensive guitar, so I sold it. $250 PU's? Yes...I'm into Will Bogg's PU's, or WCR Pu's. Those are both the best Pu's I've ever heard, and they are expensive, but worth it.

I've also had some experience with an AL. I remember once thinking the necks were boats, but played once recently and thought it was big, but still comfortable.

So yeah, all signs point to the Luke still, because I'm in a classic hits cover band. We mostly rock it up, but sometimes I need to clean up to do some funk stuff, or mid-gain Tom Petty type stuff.

My rig is an XTLive thru an Atomic 2x12. Believe it or not, it's a SCREAMER. I've used Marshall's for years, but this set up I have now is just amazing and very satisfying. I look forward to playing now EVERY single weekend simply because I can't wait to hear my amp for 3 hours! Having a killer LP running to it doesn't hurt either!

So I guess my post is geared towards realistic feedback, and suggestions. I realize that everyone has diff tastes. My goal is to get this ONE sure thing tool that can do it all, then maybe pick up another MM that is more specialized like a 3 PU P90 AL, or maybe a P90 ASS. I have a 69 SG Special w/ P90's and love it. But the buzz is just too much. I wonder if the MM P90's are the same way? Or are they more like P100's?

I think i'd be happy with any of the choices really. But I want to hit a home run, color and all. And the Luke fits the bill, except the colors for his line aren't really my thing. I kinda like the Luke Blue (the light blue), Black, and even the Blue Dawn. The BFR colors are amazing, but PRICEY. I don't want to spend that much more just to a nice color, since color is only a pref thing, not a tone thing. I could save up more and order one in the color I want. I think an Egyptian Smoke or Desert Gold LUKE would be amazing! Esp with Rosewood and Matching Headstock! I've not seen a LUKE in these colors really. I'm not sure why.

Anyway, as you can see, I have a lot of thinking to do. Your feedback, advice, and encouragement is really appreciated. Pix of various Lukes would be cool too.

I've done the search here a million times. Is it just me, or is the search feature here a bit spotty? Usually you have to sift thru tons of posts to find ONE picture you want, etc.

Anyway, you guys are great.

Thanks!
Jason

MAN, you have a LOT of free time on your hands (smiling)
Is there a dealer close by that carries MM guitars? I play in a cover band too that plays a little bit of everything, and I've found my ASS to be one of the more versatile guitars I've ever owned....although I do miss the single coil in the neck sound...si my next purchase will be a Luke or an ASS with MM90s...EBMM really got the silent circuitry thing right...almost no hum and a HUGE powerful sound.
I've never found the pickups on the ASS to be dark...a little warmer than some, which to me is a big PLUS.
Best of luck to you in your search!

Well.. I can type super fast, that's all! Which I could play as fast as I type! =)

The only dealer near me is Guitar Center, and they almost NEVER have any MM guitars. They sometimes have a JP6, but that's it. They had a used AL not long ago though. They have MM basses out the wazoo though. So, if I want to play one, I'm going to have to travel big time, and that isn't going to happen! I'm not that picky, esp when it comes to MM guitars simply because they are such high quality instruments, that you can't go wrong with any of them really.

Another thought for me was maybe a PRS Custom 22 or 24, but I'm not as jazzed up by them as the MM's.

Thanks!

Where in Indiana are you located? My store has several MM's in stock, no ASS's tho. We do have a JP6LE and a Luke that are smashing, as well as a Morse Y2D. Click on the link in my sig you can see what we have.

People don't like things that sparkle? Whaa? I love sparkly guitars.

Hey man.. I say go with the Luke or a Morse. Those are the most versatile, IMO.

Before going to your link I was saying to myself, "I hope he's not in South Bend or Evansville". DOH!! I'm closer to Chicago than I am Evansville. And I could just see the reaction on my wife's face, "honey, I'm driving four hours to go play some guitars. I'll be back tonight!!"

A knife would be buried so deep into my back, I would certainly die on the spot.

I forgot about the Morse. I think those are really cool. I must say, I'm not a huge fan of the Y2D SM's, but prefer the more classic looking model. You have to be a Nasa scientist to figure out the switching on it don't you? HA!!

Multiversal - Sparkle guitars are kind of a "niche" thing. They are in and out. They were really big several years ago, now have kind of died out. That being said, the Blue Dawn isn't SUPER sparkly like a flake.

As I said, I could pull the trigger on a Blue Dawn Luke, no problem. I could also make a run at that BFD Luke that Don is selling. it's way more than I wanted to spend, but it's freaking STUNNING looking.

Question: Will LE's be a guitar worth investing in simply because of the fact it was an LE? What makes it an "LE" anyway? Finish?

I'm sure the BFR would be the best investment. But I'm not looking for an investment per se. Just a great guitar to be proud to say is mine. The envy of all who see and play it! HA! But it is nice knowing that you have a piece that could keep or increase it's value.

Thanks!

Jason wow!!!!

I think it all started when you concluded that the "Les Paul" was your main Axe!!

Now look, you're an author, not a guitar player! LOL, LOL

Put the MM guitar back at the top of the list!!:)

You know it's funny.. I like to check out Harmony Central reviews just for kicks, even though you have to take them with a grain of salt. And aside from the Benji Madden model, the Luke gets the lowest marks usually!! The guitar everyone seems to praise the most is the JP6 and the ASS! If you look up Music Man, instead of Ernie Ball Music Man, the Luke II is there, and gets much better marks.

Speaking of, what is the diff between the Luke and the Luke II? Are all modern production Luke's considered Luke II's? They always say Luke though, not Luke II.

BTW...I'm in Kokomo Indiana. I play in Indy on the weekends usually. I'm shocked there aren't any MM dealers in Indy. GC is, but as I said, they have hardly anything on hand.

The Luke I was the older Luke model. The differences being no tone control different set of EMGs and Floyd Rose. It was discontinued when Steve Lukather and EBMM teamed up to make the Luke II. I believe it stopped production in the mid '90s not 100% though.

We had a regular Morse come in for a Customer last week. SWEET guitar, the controls gave me a headache but it sounded great.

The LE's are fantastic, the color and case makes it LE. LE JP's don't go down in value, check Ebay. Blue Dawn doesn't photograph well, it's actually pretty dark and the edges are purple not black.

The BFR JP6 is the only guitar I've ever played that I can justify the LIST price. As everyone knows, list is a bull$#!t figure that *sometimes* helps a dealer figure cost but that's about it. This thing was worth every penny looks, sound and playability wise. Definately worth the price no question. We also have BFR JP and Luke on order, should be here soon.

The Luke is an incredible guitar, I absolutely love the neck! It's the only guitar that sounds good with EMG's :)

Kokomo is quite a haul man! I used to have to go up there for Civil Air Patrol when I did that sort of thing. However, if I can do anything for you in the next couple of weeks just send me a PM!

I have a friend that wants to sell me his EVH MM in really good shape. Purple top is not real faded at all. The top is more of a flame, not a quilt. No quilt at all really. More like a plain top with a little flame. Looks great though. Like a nicely warn pair of jeans. The VH's have such a great neck though. I've heard that the guitar is kind of a one trick pony though right? So essentially, it's the highly collectible and great feeling VH vs Luke for the same or more money? EVH is collectible and all, but an Axis is just as nice I guess. I always dreamed of owning a VH, and had a chance at a Green one for $900 RIGHT as VH announced he was leaving EB. Literally that same week this one went for sale. I called the guy and he said, "Yeah man, come down on Friday". So I was all excited. Then he calls back a couple of days later and said, "I just heard the EVH has left MM, so this might be worth holding on to cuz they aren't going to make them anymore, so I've decided not to sell it." I was CRUSHED! At the time, it wasn't as well known just how rare a Green one would be. I was two days away from owning it too!!

Anyway, perhaps buying an EVH is a bad choice? I'm sure the Luke is so much more, and an Axis gets you pretty much the same thing. But still... an EVH MM! I don't know. HELP!!

If you like the feel of your strat but aren't quite happy with the tone, I'd think about switching out the pickguard and pickups to the David Gilmore EMG set. It's called the DG20 (or used to be when I did it 4-5 years ago).

It made a tremendous difference in tone (I did it because i was floored by how much better my new Luke sounded than my 30 year old strat). Plus it gives you great tone coloration with a seperate knob for highs/lows and another for mids.

But I just had too much trouble fighting with the neck of my strat (too big) to play it. I still have it, but never and I mean never play it.

BTW a drawback to the DG20 is that you have to remove the pickguard to change the 9volt out. But only every few months so it's very wrth it if you love the feel of your strat.

You can always have the guys at your local GC transfer in a couple of EBMM's for you to try out from other stores. With as many stores as they have they should be able to locate and bring in something close to what your looking for for you.
