hi guys and girls,

I have a little question for ya all. Did John use his EBMM on the Scenes from a memory album? I've heard that he used a prototype on that album.

And if he did, does anybody know if it changed much from that time (basically the sound). I liked his distortion sound on that album, but on the next albums it started to sound much 'darker' if you can call it like that. I didn't like it that much as the SFAM album so I was wondering if it was the guitar that changed or the amps or maybe sth else,

thanks for any feedback,

Philip

Philip,
I'm not sure if a prototype was used for SFAM, but I know he used a couple of his models in the Live SFAM DVD. I think the black sparkle in that was a prototype.

I'd venture to say that the change in tone you're talking about was when he changed from the MKIV's to the Roadking and Lonestar series amps. I doubt that there were many changes to the guitar that would have that drastic an affect on his tone.

Although he's probably able to dial in any of those tones through the MKIV's I seem to recall him usually changing his rig every couple of years.

thanks for the info Fred, I watched the DVD and the tone was 180' different from the album, there was to much middle in his sound to me. I also think that his sound changed because of the amps... I liked his sound more from the albums like "Awake" and metioned above SFAM

If I remember correctly, there was a prior discussion on this topic you may be able to search where it indicated that because of the time frame, the studio recording was done with his former guitar but when they recorded the live DVD it was with the EBMM which had just recently been introduced.

Some of the more ardent Petruci fans may be able to corroborate this and I think it was OC who set the timeline.

hey mbgreene, I've found the thread about it, you are right OC posted that JP didn't use EBMM on SFAM album, I thought so because his sound on this album was more like the other albums which he recorded with EBMM JPM (a little darker). But it was more in his Mesa/Boogie's change than guitar I believe

SFAM was recorded with those other guitars and Mesa Boogie MkII C+ amps. He discovered EBMM during the SFAM tour. Since then, he's always played the EBMMs (maybe a rhythm track or two with that funny looking thing Mr Tremonti gave him) but the amp rig had changed quite a bit with JP returning to Rectos on 6DOIT, then a lot of Road King action on the last two albums.

I personally hope he breaks the MkIIC+ rig out again, which was my fave JP tone. For me, they sound tighter and track better on the lower strings.

I completly agree. also, to my damaged ears, his newer tone has lost just a little of its individuality. I'm sure I'll hear back about this one... :D

he changed to ebmms at the end of the sfam tour
so the album was recorded with the ibanez's

i wonder what sort of an acoustic he uses in the studio now?
i know on tot it is just the piezo but on octavarium i wonder what brand he uses

on the sfam tour i think he is using both a mark IV and a mark IIc+

AFAIK, Petrucci uses Taylor acoustic guitars. I remember a brief article in Guitarist magazine that said JP went along to the Taylor factory but couldn't decide which model he liked the best so he ended up purchasing 3 or 4 of them!

I think Bowks is corrent, he uses Taylors. I have Dream Theater's 5 Years in a LIVEtime DVD, you can see him playing Taylor there.

Here's a mystery for all you DT/JP lovers though:
on 5 Years in a LIVEtime DVD, there are clips from live show in Rotterdam. On one song, Anna Lee, JP uses a guitar with 3 single-coil pickups that look like "lipstick" pickups to me. You can't really see the shape of the guitar, but it's sorta like Godin's signlecut, or maybe Conklin's Crossover, transparent orange or similar color over flamed maple top, with whitish pickguard. Any ideas what that guitar is?

I think he also playes Rickenbacker in one of the studio clips on that DVD.

The guitar that JP was playing is an Ibanez Talman model.

I got the reply on the JP Forums... The guitars were definetly prototypes... and the amps were triaxises with 2:90 and marks IIC+ and IV and a dual rectifier for a rack

So the answer is - on the record - NO

on most of the tour - NO

on the end of the tour - YES
