Difference Bongo 5H vs. Bongo 5HH

I was wondering about the difference in sound between these two, besides that the HH will have a neck-only sound you will not get with the single H.

Can someone who played both please explain the main points?

The single H Bongo has its pickup in the same position as a Stingray, wheras the HH has it closer to the bridge. Therefore, the single H has a more agressive character, similar to that of the Stingray - but more Bongoey.

The HH will produce a tighter punchy tone with the bridge H, deep and phat tone with the neck H...and with both H's..well that's just silly!

Well, I'd say the Bong makes more gurgly kinds of noises than the Bongo.

:p

This has been covered quite a bit. Search is your friend....

They are definitely different. The H is, as BP has said, "point and shoot." Always produces a great sound. The HH gives you a wider range of tone.

I have both, and I pretty much always leave the HH pickup pan right in the middle (which does not sound like the H, by the way).

Both are great, in different ways.

If you're the kind of guy who likes fiddling a lot to get things JUST RIGHT then the HH gives you plenty to play with.

If you're the kind of guy who likes to keep it simple, then H might be a better choice.

You won't go wrong either way.

My H is a lot lighter than my HHp.

What does the blend-knob blend on the single H? bridge, both and neck?

I am on the hunt for either a singel H or a HH but not quite shure what to get yet.

There is no blend knob on the single H, just volume, treble, mid and bass (like a stingray).

This, however, does not mean the H is not versatile, as the preamp is exceptionally powerful. The HH comes with a blend knob. It also has a 4 band EQ (like the big al you own)

Just to add a bit to what Duarte said...

The pickup position and control layout is the same as a Stingray, but the Bongo H is definitely not just a Stingray with a different shape.

It's got a neodymium pickup, and Dudley's awesome 18-volt preamp. It is a completely different beast.

Thanks a lot.
This was just the missing info, as I was a little confused by the description at The Perfect Bass...

yeah, I noticed that...Brandt if you're listening this must be changed.

HH or HS are both great options. Try them both out, and see what you like best.

Oh, and Adouglas, thanks for filling in my blanks, I don't know why I missed those points out

Where are you getting single H Bongos? I almost never see these.

I often explain it this way.

"We are Americans. So if 'some' is good, 'more' is more gooder!"

And so we drink 48 oz soft drinks and eat triple burgers and drive Hummers.

And, if we can get TWO pickups, why settle for just ONE?

Good retailers understand their customers, and GC didn't buy single H Bongos because, by god, they could get TWO HUMBUCKER Bongos! Hey, I love the HH and HS Bongos, too, but....yeah, that single H really IS the Secret Weapon.

Probably a few dealers stock them here and there, but not The Big Guitar Chain Dudes. They couldn't even figure out how to sell the 'sexier' dual pickup Bongos! I think I probably have more single H bongos in the closet than GC ever had at any given store.

So unless you're close to DuBaldo's or TPB or maybe Bass Central, the best thing to do is come over to my house and let's make martinis and play some basses.

adouglas,
How much lighter?

anyone,

According to Brandt at The Perfect Bass, my 5H came in at an amazing 8.8 (or was it 8.9?) pounds. He weighs everything and posts the weights.

I should have printed out the web page when I had the chance. Darn. Can't find it on Google cache, either.

I don't have a particularly accurate scale at home, so all I can tell you is that my HHp weighs considerably more than that.

While Dallas is geographically farther than any of those from me, that drive sounds totally worth it! Bongos and Martinis. Hell, Bongos with Martinis on them. How could you go wrong???:D

GC should really consider adding a wet bar...

The weight difference between the HH and H might not be very consistent. Some of the HH basses on TPB are listed as being lighter than some of the H models.
Still, <9 lbs is pretty impressive for a 5 string.
