A couple if days ago, when looking at some of my basses, I thought to myself "funny, looks as if the body of this one is slimmer than of that one". However, it was late, and I was too lazy to find a ruler and take some measurements.

Yesterday evening, after playing my '88 Sabre and picking up my '07 'Ray, it struck me again. This thing feels thicker! That time, I put it down, found a ruler, and started measuring my Music Men.

And the truth is: They are not all made equal!

Body thickness
  • 45mm: 2006 SR4HH, 2007 SR4HH, 2008 SR4HH, 2007 SR5 20th, 2009 SR4HH Ebony, 2009 25th
  • 40mm: 1981 SR4 2EQ, 1988 SR4FL 3EQ, 1988 Sabre 2EQ, 1996 SR4 20th, 2001 SR4 100th, 2006 SR4 30th

So... what gives? I guess there must be some reason behind this.

First I thought that's the rule as well, but...
- the SR5 20th single H is thicker
- the Sabre is a HH and thinner

otherwise it's really hard to tell, because I don't have any SR4 single H anymore from recent years.

It also could have changed sometime in 2006 with the introduction of the new dual pickup Rays. All the thinner bodies are 2006 and earlier and the thicker ones are 2006 and later. No idea though.

Yeah, but the SR5 H is a 20th, with tone block and fancy top ...it's not made equal by any account.

And the Sabre, is, well, a Sabre!
