I was wondering what the differences between the necks on all the EBMM musicman guitars are. I know the following:

Silhouette/Silhouette Special/Sub1: same neck
Luke: thinner than silo and V-shape
Petrucci: Thinner than Silhouette
Albert Lee: ???
Axis Super Sport: ???

How are the AL and ASS neck's different from a Silhouette? I only played a Sub1 (the one which I own) and a Silhouette (owned that one for a week ;) ).

I love the neck feel on both guitars, but if there's something even better, ofcourse I would like to know. ;) The problem here in the Netherlands is that there are very few Musicman dealers who have anything EBMM in stock, so trying out an Axis is very difficult, and an AL.... Well, AL's are nowhere to be found here. :(

Thanks in advance!

I don't think this is correct. Sub1 has a finished neck and Silhouettes are unfinished (oil finished to be more precise).

Yup, you're right. But i'm talking shape wise. ;)

I'm especially interested in the AL vs SILO shape. Maybe Robelinda could tell me the difference between the two? :)

The AL and Silo neck shapes are comparable and have similar profiles. I find the AL to be a bit smaller (I've heard others say the opposite), but a lot probably depends on how they were sanded.

The Axis feels smaller, and is asymmetrical, in that the treble side of the neck is thinner than the bass side. It's more of a "worn-in" neck right from the factory. The original neck profile was recreated after Sterling & Dudley digitized the neck from EVH's #1. It's a very comfortable neck.

All three have a radius of 10", rounder than the Morse (12"), Luke (12") or the JP (15").

I've always found the AL neck to be most similar to the Axis neck in terms of feel even though the Axis neck has an asymetrical carve.

The JP neck is definitely the thinnest of the ones you mentioned and IMO very different than the Silo neck. The Silo neck that I played to me felt thinner than the Axis & Al necks and felt like it had more of a C shape than a D shape.

+1 on the AL/Axis neck similarities. They both have a "broken in" feel and are very comfortable.

The Silo has more of a classic strat style C-shape. I've played a few, and most of them feel wider and chunkier than an Axis. I noticed it mostly between frets 1-6.

For me it's hard to say which feels bigger, the Axis or Silo (Special) neck, since they have entirely different shapes. For me, the Silo works better than the Axis shape.

Am surprised to hear someone say the AL feels smaller than the Silo. But not surprised, because I know how different that two same model necks can feel. As Beej said, each neck is individually sanded, and therefore has a different feel.
