Hi,
Ive decided that I want to do the whole pre-amp/power-amp thing. I would love to get an Ampeg SVT, but alas, money sucks when you dont have any. Ive been looking around and those two seem to be good options, espcially the recording abilities of the BNX3. Has anyone ever used one of theses two? If so what are your thoughts? If it turns out both of these are no good Ill find something else, but these are looking kinda in my price range. Thanks.

It really depends on whether you want a "preamp" or a "digital emulator". The Pod, Digitech, Boss GT-6B and the Sansamp are all decent units that aim to digitally emulate the sound of other amps (quite well, in some cases). On the other hand, if you want an analogue preamp that will take the natural sound of your bass and turn it into "your own" tone, an analogue tube preamp is the way to go. Again, price range will be a determining factor.

i like the bass POD for recording, not so much for live sound. I know Bela Fleck uses a guitar pod for live shows and sounds real good, but i dont know. I think you should get a non emulator preamp for your amp.

id like to get an Ampeg Svt head but 1600 is way out of my range. id go for the ampeg svp-cl pre-amp but 700 is still a bit much. in that case the pod would be out because its 700 as well. i was thinking the bnx3 because of the built in recorder and its ability to emulate the svt. i think right now recording some of my stuff to play along with would be beneficial. that, and effects are fun to play with sometimes. for a price range id say about 300 give or take a bit.

Id check out the Tech 21 Sans Amp. I dont own one, but have been considering one. They are smokin.

The Sansamp is the way to go. I use mine as a preamp, DI and as a distortion box, depending on what I need at the time. I think it's analogue.

I've tried Digitech stuff in the past (not this one) and they struck me as noisy. Never tried the pod, but I've heard good things.

I've been doing some research on the BBE B-Max, both the solid state and the tube model. I haven't heard either of them yet, but the reviews from the people who have tried them are pretty good. It seems that most of them don't recognize enough difference between the two to justify spending twice as much on the tube model though. It also gives you the BBE Sonic Maximizer built in so that you can have your pre-amp and BBE in one rack space.

The BNX3 does seem a bit noisy depending on how you have it set as far as pre-amping is concerned(I only use it for FX--whammy,distortion, wah, etc.) The pitch shifting of the Whammy is a Godsend to me & I use the recorder portion as a sampler for song intros & such.
