dirty neck

my maple fretboard stingray neck is getting hecka dirty. how can i clean it? with just steel wool? i rub parallel to the neck, right?

yeah...do other people have problems?
i sort of want a rosewood neck now.

I've been playing a maple necked Sterling as my main bass for close to five years now, (okay, the Bongo has been getting a lot of play lately) and I've found that the key to keeping the board looking good is as simple as keeping your hands clean. I'm not a clean freak by any stretch, but when I watch our guitar players eat pizza, chips, and subs during breaks and then go straight for their guitars, I cringe. I know you asked how to clean it, and Colin's link is a good one, but I guess my response is for the future once you get it spiffy again.
