This might seem a daft question but I am very highly qualified in daftology:D
I was wondering at what stage in the guitar making process is the DOB determined - for example my Axis is 12th September 2005 - so what did look like then - was it fully dressed or in bits or just a twinkle in BP's eye?!;)

OK - so finished, strung, set up, put in case ready to go?! = DOB?
I was just curious as I am sure the serials must be alocated at a prior stage and just wondered at what stage of completion it was recorded - ie set up and QC prior to sending out.

I believe necks / bodies are coordinated by order but don't come together until set up. i.e. they go through carving, painting, coating, buffing etc. independently and then get matched up at the end. The serial #'s are on the neck plate so it isn't officially assigned to an individual instrument until it's bolted together and then it can be recorded. The serials aren't coded for date or other production info but are roughly sequential as they are pulled from the box to asemble each instrument.

Ok - so the guitars get the serial numbers when the necks and bodies are united with the engraved plate - the bodies finished and assembled/ wired up fixed to completed neck with neck plate = DOB then guitars strung and setup and QC?

We'll get there in the end - I'm sure total enlightenment is not too far away:D

The DOB is the day the guitar was assembled. The serial # is given when the set up guys bolt the neck on, string it up, and do the set up. The instrument is then inspected, and the work order info including the serial # are entered in the system as completed. That's your DOB, people.
