Hi there,

Just took delivery of the new love of my life, a beautiful Axis SS with a quilted maple top, rosewood board, vintage trem and finished in a sumptious dark transparent blue.

The guitar has never been played, it belonged to a collector who obviously had more money than sense and just kept it in it's case since the day he bought it.

It's a beautiful instrument and I'm guessing that it's fairly old as it has a straight nut as opposed to the graduated variety.

Could you kind folks please let me know its date of birth please and if possible tell me the official name of the colour.

Guitar's serial is....G26552

Many thanks,

Charlie.

Nice Score!! The color is called Pacific Blue Burst (one of my favorites) and it was done on 12/28/04. It was originally sent to our UK distributor, Strings & Things.

Just to say many thanks for the info and to avoid my new baby going 'poof' here are a couple of photographs for your delectation. As with other Pacific Blue Burst owners the green tint which is clearly visible in certain lights doesn't really show up here but that's probably just down to my lousy photography, or camera, or both!

Anyhoo, 2004 Axis Super Sport in Pacific Blue, never played before I purchased it, 100% minty :D

PBB + Rosewood + Natty head, thats a winner! Love that quilt!!

Yep, this one is definitely a keeper for me.

Earlier this year I had a 2006 ASS in Vintage s'burst which I had to sell owing to financial reasons but I wasn't heartbroken to let it go as it had a maple board and it really upset me to see it get dirtier every time I played the guitar. I know some people love the lived in look but for me it spoilt the appearance of an otherwise immaculate guitar.

I therefore decided that when I could afford it I would get another ASS but with a rosewood board, hence the purchase of this 2004 minty example.

There are three main differences which I can make out between this 2004 guitar and the 2006 one I had earlier.

1, the 2004 instrument feels considerably lighter than the 2006 example.

2, there is a straight nut on the 2004 guitar whereas the 2006 model had a graduated nut.

3, The neck of the 2004 model feels so much slimmer than the 2006 guitar. The 2006 neck was really quite chunky, a bit like a 50's rounded Gibson type, the 2004 neck is so much nicer (for me at least), slim and very Strat-like to hold.

Although there are zero intonation issues with the instrument, I kind of wish it had a graduated nut as somehow it feels like my guitar is missing out on an improvement it was deemed necessary to fit to the guitars. That aside, the weight and balance are perfect for me and that slim neck is to die for.

I didn't think a purchaser had a choice of neck profiles when ordering an instrument, so I was wondering, did the ASS neck just get chunkier over time or is my guitar a bit of a one off?

Best wishes to you all, Charlie (UK)
