Hi folks,

OK, where do I start ?

About two months ago, I had to make a big decision.

My beloved Leila (SR5) had some serious trouble. Though carefully following the setup instructions, I had to notice that each time it would be well setup, two or three days later the neck would warp again, at a point where I had some dead notes on the upper end of the neck (first five frets close to the nut). This happen three times, in a ten days time lap.

I'm afraid the big variations we had here about weather played a part in that trouble, but I also think maybe something had gone wrong with the previous owner, since I already had more or less some equal trouble with it shortly after buying it. Unfortunately, Leila, born in 2003, and purchased used in 2007, was out of warranty, and I had no efficient and quick solution to have it repaired.

Leila is gone on June 20. I traded her in at a low price. I had to leave the shop with a brand new bass (didn't want to experience any kind of trouble again, and you probably won't see me buy anything used anymore). Due to the trade in, the price jump was too high for me at this time, and I left the shop with a non-EBMM bass (actually we're all mature enough to read I took a Fender Am Dlx J 5).

This means I'm currently EBMM-less. :(

Don't get me wrong. Money is coming back, and I'll probably get a new SR5 before the end of this year.

I'm sad, very sad, but I really had no other choice.

Back soon with good news.

Cheers folks !

Either way Jay, you've got yourself a good bass. Hopefully you can pick yourself up another MM but I don't think you'll be sweatin' anything on the gig.

Have you given any thought to what Stingray is going to replace Leila?

All basses that I used to own, including current Bongo 5, were used. That is about 8 basses in total. Only one had any issues, and it was factory problem (it was not an MM bass). All other were in perfect condition so i don't see the point to buy new one. Other thing is that I live in Europe and new Bongo 5 is about 3600$ here, and I earn 1000$ a month.

I'm really sorry that You EBMM-less, but if I were You, I'd go for another one on ebay. The chances for another bad one are minimum.

Personally I think that If You buy a good used bass, and it does not have any issues, than chances that it would have some in future are close to zero. Wood always needs time to settle down, so older=better.

But thats just my opinion, and I'm a bongo freak, so don't listen to me. Be happy with Your new bass

Sucks you don't have an EBMM bass.

And I'm sorry your experience with a used one was bad.

I can, however, tell you from experience that not every new bass is pristine quality either, for a multitude of reasons. Just ask me about my Mexi5.

+1 on buying used. Except for one case where the seller deliberately lied about the condition of the bass, I've not had no worse experience than buying new. If you buy an instrument sight unseen, it's always a bit of a gamble...

the only problem i've had with used basses is the set up, but i do my own set up work and within and hours time the bass is cleaned up and ready to rock...

I have to tell You, that the most fun and exciting thing with used instruments, is the first day when they arrive. And it's even better if strings are very high and the bass is all dirty with old strings. I take strings off, clean fingerboard with lemon oil, frets with polish paste. I take care off every scratch and polish the whole body. Put strings on, set up everything the way I like and vuala. It,s very rewarding and takes about 3 - 4 hours, but I love it.

I had a new bass once, I was happy about it, but there was something missing... so I cleaned it anyway :)
