What do you think is John's most creative/coolest sounding guitar track and solo. BP, if your talking to JOhn you want to ask him what his fav is for me? ;).

I really like his solo album, "suspended animation" My favorite tracks are "tunnel vision" and "animate-inanimate." Very inventive playing.

Hi Addy,

I'm not quite as familiar with JP's solos as I should be - my husband actually listens to more Dream Theater proper than I do....

However, having said that, here's my 2 cents on Petrucci:

I love all the Liquid Tension Experiment stuff, especially the first CD, and especially Three Minute Warning.

DT - I've probably listened to 6DOIT and A Change of Seasons the most.

I love the whole live Medley they do on ACOS - especially that bit of Cruise Control.

I think he's really a brilliant guitarist, and you can totally hear the Steve Morse influence in his playing.

Definitely, his solo album is a must-own. The whole thing is most excellent, "Tunnel Vision" is my favorite track. (Listening to Glasgow Kiss as I write this post :D )

I'm also partial to a lot of JP's 7-string stuff (Lie, Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, ACoS, among others). Just sounds cool, he really knows how to use the extra range.

+1 on that...
Under a Glass Moon has a fantastic solo.
and Glass Prison...whenever JP and Jordan play dueling solos, they just blaze

also, the solo at the end of Lie is insane.

Adam-

I ordered it from his website, and it took about six weeks due to the back order. That was in March, so the wait may be longer now, not sure.

you could try ebay:

Sean

Oops, musta missed these replies. Thanks Sean. I'd really like to hear "An Evening With..." also.

How 'bout a quick little Petrucci tidbit from the past.......

Majesty (previous name of Dream Theater) was playing at a local Long Island club back in the 80's, this was not long after turning him onto Dregs/SMB. I'm standing right up front by the stage as they came out. They're standing on stage waiting to start and John sees me, so he starts playing the intro to "On The Pipe". We both grinned as he played it perfectly. Then later in the set when they do their trademark instrumental "Ytse Jam" (which is Majesty spelled backwards, btw) and sure enough, during the cover medley section, they go into the main theme to "Cruise Control". Pretty cool.

One thing about Petrucci, when he plays other guitarists' stuff, he plays it PERFECTLY, exactly like the original. In high school, he could do La Villa Strangiato note for note...and of course EVERY Iron Maiden song.

What's this?! Are people forgetting the masterpiece that is Metropolis PT 1?!
Images and words is a classic!! And that song is my favourite by far.

I'd have to say that Metropolis PT2 has got to be the album with his most inventive playing - the songs are magnificent and everything just gels into place. You can listen to the songs on their own or as a full album and it works!! Plus the solos are well composed and really have a place in all the songs.

I actually found that his playing on Train of Thought to be a little predictable - don't kill me! It was kind of limited to lightening fast shred runs and there was very little movement in there.

Awake was an excellent blend of prog and metal and, in my humble opinion, their only album to really mix the two seamlessly. Also, the solo on Voices still sends shivers up my spine - that was a corker!!
